Of all the things that we collect or inherit, jewellery is in a category all of its own when it comes to holding personal meaning. Whether it’s your own wedding ring or an Art Deco necklace your granny wore as she glamorously wafted around Paris in the 1930s or even a piece of costume jewellery you’ve loved since you were a child, jewellery feels personal in a way that, say, even your very best jumper simply does not.

Yet without thoughtful storage, those treasures can quickly become tangled frustrations or dulled by neglect. A few simple habits – and the right containers – make all the difference, protecting against scratches, tarnish and sadly diminished sparkle. Plus the boxes themselves can be (almost) as lovely – all while making picking out a piece to wear more pleasurable. Here, then, are the essentials for keeping things elegant and orderly – and maybe even rediscovering that bracelet that had got stuffed in the back of a drawer.

How To Store Jewellery Properly

Jewellery lasts longest when it’s stored properly rather than dropped en masse into a dish. Ideally, keep pieces separated, dry and out of direct sunlight. Soft-lined boxes prevent scratching, while divided trays stop chains knotting. Silver benefits from anti-tarnish strips or cloth pouches, and delicate stones (opal, pearl, turquoise) appreciate a little humidity rather than bone-dry air. The general rule: if it can rub, it will scratch.

How To Clean Jewellery Safely

First things first: cleaning depends very much on the material. And if in doubt, err on the gentle side – aggressive cleaning causes more damage than everyday wear.

Gold and platinum: Warm water, mild washing-up liquid and a soft brush usually suffice.

Silver: A proper silver cloth is better than dips for regular use; overuse of chemical cleaners can dull the finish.

Gemstones: Most harder stones tolerate gentle washing, but avoid soaking anything porous (pearls, opals, amber).

Costume jewellery: Keep water exposure minimal; wipe with a dry cloth instead.
