It’s difficult to know where to travel this summer, what with Covid travel restrictions, so why not consider something out of the ordinary, a safari? It would certainly be a holiday to remember. Now is the time to get the whole family together, grandparents, families, extended family, after months of separation. A once-in-a-lifetime trip to watch ‘The Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth’, the Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa, is the perfect antidote to the last year of uncertainty.

Safaria specialists

We asked safari specialists, Ker Downey® to share their expertise on what to expect on a family safari. This luxury travel company has designed a ten day Private Family Safari in Tanzania that invites families to explore the country’s most remote wildlife destination from exclusive-use luxury camps and safari villas.

Lisa Nel, Head of Product and Marketing at Ker & Downey® Africa, tells us that “Each property has been carefully selected to offer professional staff, child-minding services, dedicated guides and private safari vehicles, to ensure the utmost luxury for you and never-ending excitement for your tribe.”

Wildebeest Herds In The Serengeti

The Great Wildebeest Migration

This safari has been carefully timed to coincide with East Africa’s Great Wildebeest Migration, where families can witness the renowned Mara River crossing – a fantastic spectacle with herds of animals plunging into the dangerous, crocodile infested waters of the Mara River.

Private game drives

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, families will be transferred deep into Maasai territory to Entamanu Private – an exclusive-use safari home set on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater. Dedicated guides and private safari vehicles are on hand so that families can discover this UNESCO World Heritage Site on private game drives through the Crater. There are guided highland walks with a dedicated Maasai scout, and excursions to the nearby Maasai boma to gain insight into the lives of the Maasai people.

Northern Serengeti

The itinerary continues in the Northern Serengeti at Mkombe’s House – the only self-contained private house in the Serengeti. Named after a guide who cherished this region and families, Mkombe’s House is committed to being as child-friendly as possible and is fully staffed complete with an in-house chef, babysitters and private guides. Families can set their own schedule and explore the region on game drives and bush walks, or venture to the nearby Mara River to view the herds of wildebeest thunder across the waters from July to August and again from October to November.

Nyerere National Park

The safari experience continues in Nyerere National Park, previously Selous Game Reserve, at Kiba Point. The exclusive-use camp features four separate rooms each fitted with a private pool allowing families to strike that perfect balance of time spent together and separately. Kiba Point has its own small team of guides and staff to ensure that each stay is as stress-free as possible. Families can head out into this UNESCO World Heritage Site on foot, by boat or by vehicle and visit the nearby hot springs and nearby hide at a time that suits them best.
