Gitcombe House, Totnes

Devon
Sleeps 13
Gitcombe House

Want to feel as though you’ve disappeared into the pages of a Jane Austen novel (while still having every 21st-century luxury available to you)? Gitcombe House, which is close to the market town of Totnes, is sublime, its superlative Georgian proportions making us sigh in simple reflex at its sheer perfection. If spending your holidays having drinks on a manicured lawn, rustling up dinners in the Downton-worthy kitchen or dipping into your own pool (both indoor and outdoor) sound like your thing, then Gitcombe House is, surely, a contender. Think open fireplaces, AGAs and stately dining rooms – all with the sea, as well as Dartmouth, just a short drive away. Part of a wider estate (there is a communal hot tub at guests’ disposal), it is ideal for children too, thanks to a snug for them to get cosy in.

Nyland Lodge, Strawberryfield Park

Somerset
Sleeps Two
Nyland Lodge

Set in the rolling Somerset hills, Strawberryfield Park offers a wonderfully romantic luxury escape for two. Beautifully light, open-plan and with state-of-the-art Bang and Olufsen appliances, it has a Scandinavian feel throughout – nowhere more so than on the sublime private terrace, where you’ll find a sunken hot tub for hours of relaxing under the stars. If you can tear yourself away for long enough, don’t neglect to explore the nearby trails in the Mendip Hills or visit Cheddar Gorge for a taste of Somerset life.

York House, Sidmouth

Devon
Sleeps Six
York House

If you’re on the lookout for a holiday let with sea views, you could hardly do much better than this duplex apartment, which sleeps six. York House is situated right on the beautiful promenade at Sidmouth in all its Georgian elegance. Inside, period features abound, but for us it is the idea of throwing the sash windows wide to be gently lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves and then awoken by seagull cries overhead that is irresistible. On sunny mornings, why not take your morning coffee on the bedroom balcony? It’s not hard to see why they say the Devon is heaven.

Highview Barn, Saunton

Devon
Sleeps Four
Highview Barn

Just moments from the famous Saunton Sands, this converted barn is a holiday dream. Offering capacious accommodation and high vaulted ceilings, it has its own enclosed rural garden, as well as being minutes from the beach. Ideal for a family of four, Highview Barn is both stylish and spacious, with a convivial space for dining (and for the playing of compulsory holiday boardgames), as well as a furnished terrace and a barbecue for lunches and dinners al fresco when it’s balmy outside. The ground floor has also been designed to be fully accessible to people of limited mobility.

Watersend House, Newquay

Cornwall
Sleeps Twelve
Watersend House

Would you feel mean treating yourself to a beach holiday and leaving your four-legged friend in kennels? The good news is that the stunning Watersend House is dog-friendly, so there’s no need for the furriest member of the family to miss out on all salty sandy fun. It also sleeps twelve, making it great for group holidays, and is just 500m from Watergate Bay beach. Expect spectacular sea views, a gorgeous farmhouse-style kitchen, log burners for cosying up to, a hot tub and convivial outdoor entertaining space. It ticks so many boxes: if you love surfing, this is a total winner. Food lover? Stroll along the beach to Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen. Love drinks on a terrace? It has all that and more. The most idyllic setting for a beachside getaway.

Iris, St Ives Cottages

Cornwall
Sleeps Five
Iris

This family-friendly Green Tourism Award-winning fisherman’s cottage in picturesque St Ives, that legendary coastal crucible of great artists, oozes charm and character. Marrying the contemporary sensibility for open plan, light-filled spaces with characterful original beams and exposed stone walls, Iris is situated right on St Ives’ most famous street. And from this enviable location, all you and the family need to do is amble down to the two stretches on golden sand on the doorstep.

Little Trevara, Marazion

Cornwall
Sleeps Four
Little Trevara

Is there anything more alluring than the idea of a terrace with a panoramic sea view, from which to survey its swells, tides and changing moods? Little Trevara in Marazion, which is packed full of old-world charm, has just such a spot, as well as a modern sensibility within a gorgeous traditional Cornish cottage. French doors from the bedroom lead to an enclosed garden; just the place to take breakfast and great rejuvenating gulps of fresh sea air.
