If you want hair shinier than a conker, here are our favourite post-summer treatments to strengthen, gloss and restore shine.

It’s been a tough year – and not least for our hair. During lockdown, corona cuts left us with lopsided fringes and dodgy dye jobs, immediately after which our tresses were treated to a summer of sea, sun and chlorine (for the lucky ones, anyway). You wouldn’t be alone, then, if you are emerging this season with parched, frazzled locks in need of some serious TLC.

Enter a slew of deeply nourishing hair treatments, designed to undo the damage 2020 has wreaked and repair stressed out locks and scalps. Skincare has long since harnessed vitamin-rich formulas and superfood ingredients; now haircare is catching up. If you’re keen to pamper your mane at-home, here are some great products to help this autumn.

Philip Kingsley

Flaky/Itchy Scalp Mask, £19

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, and award-winning tricologist Philip Kingsley’s iconic Flaky/Itchy range soothes and calms. This treatment mask has anti-oxidant rich green tea, gently exfoliating salicylic acid and anti-fungal properties to treat the root cause of dandruff and flakes.

Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Avocado Leave-In Defining Cream, £18.50

As credentials go, New York haircare brand, Briogeo ticks all the boxes: expect 90 – 100 per cent naturally derived ingredients across the range, all packaged in recycled bottles. Plus, Briogeo trumpets that its products are ‘6-free’ – meaning formulas are all sulphate-, paraben-, phthalates-, silicones-, DEA- and synthetic colour-free. The Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Avocado Leave-In Defining Crème is a brilliant styling treatment for curly, wavy or coiled hair. The rice amino-acids seal the hair, locking out humidity – aka frizz-proofing your do – while the nourishing avocado oil helps retain moisture and protect from heat-styling. Safe for coloured and keratin- or chemically-treated hair.

Supersize No. 3 Hair Perfector, £52

If you know, you know. Cult hair brand, Olaplex’s No. 3 Hair Perfector just went supersize – perfect for those already hooked on its patented formula that repairs broken bonds in hair’s structure at a molecular level. Great too if you’re hair’s taken a hammering with bleaching and styling over lockdown. It will smooth, strengthen and restore brittle, dry and damaged locks to silky smooth lengths with healthy shine.

The Inkey List

Vitamin C Brightening Hair Treatment, £9.99

Vitamin C was the darling of the skincare world in 2019, and this year haircare is getting a look in. The Inkey List’s brightening Vitamin C hair treatment will inject a shot of shine and brilliance to lacklustre locks that have been dulled by at-home dyes and over-styling. The silky serum doesn’t just coat locks with silicones to give the superficial feel of softer tresses; its scientific formula repairs damage and increases its resistance to humidity-induced fuzz. If you’re looking for an intensive, wallet-friendly repair treatment, start here.

Renewing Conditioning Treatment, £19

We are huge fans of the family-run, Italian haircare brand Davines and its renewing conditioning treatment is perfect for post-summer repair. It nourishes, moisturises and stimulates the scalp without weighing hair down. Add into your haircare regime twice a week for transformative results.

Rose Hair and Scalp Moisturising masque, £25

Aussie Apothecary brand Aesop’s Rose Hair and Scalp Masque smells incredible. Enriched with nourishing botanicals, its dual-action restores lustre to locks and soothes irritated scalps in one hit. A sensory experience, with warm woody notes and rose petal extract, massage this deeply hydrating masque into lengths and scalp and leave it to work its magic before rinsing to reveal silky soft, scented locks.

Bumble & Bumble

Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Hot Oil Concentrate, £7

Hot oil hair treatments might feel a bit 80s throwback, but for a super intensive one-off treatment, they can’t be beaten. Forget a greasy oil-slick; Bumble & Bumble’s lightweight Invisible Oil is a blend of six nourishing ingredients designed to soften, tame, de-frizz, de-tangle and protect. Coarse, dry or brittle hair drinks in the intense formula for deep-down conditioning results. The ultimate SOS remedy.
