7 Tips For Applying Facial SPF Effectively

Minimum SPF

As a minimum, ensure you are using an SPF30 on your face. Whereas our bodies are usually protected from direct sunlight by our clothes, our face is exposed all the time and therefore needs a higher level of protection.

Use 365 Days A Year

There is a misconception that you only need to protect your skin from the sun’s rays on bright days. In fact, even in the greyest weather those UVA and UVB rays will break through the cloud and cause damage. By making it part of your morning skin routine it will become a daily habit, come rain or shine.

Don’t Forget Your Ears, Lips, Neck And Décolleté

When applying sunscreen, it’s common to forget the peripheries – until they burn. Ensure you are covering your hairline, tops of your ears, back of your neck and right down your décolleté. Use a specific SPF balm for lips and if you have any excess sunscreen left over after applying, use it on the backs of your hands, which will benefit from the added TLC.

Skincare Step

Apply directly to cleansed and moisturised skin before any make-up and leave at least 30 mins before any sun exposure to ensure full protection.

Reapply Every Two-To-Three Hours

Applying in the morning as part of your morning skincare routine is not enough; you must re-apply every two-to-three hours (or more frequently if you are swimming) to ensure you are keeping the maximum level of protection up.

Extra Protection

Keep out of the sun between noon and 3pm when it’s at its strongest and do use wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses to protect your face from the sun at other times.

Evening Routine

Ensure you cleanse thoroughly at night to remove all traces of SPF to prevent breakouts and clogged pores.
