Over the past decade, we’ve fallen hard for cottagecore style – a term that was only belatedly coined in 2018. But what is it exactly? Also known as ‘farmcore’, at its heart, cottagecore is an idealised take on the bucolic life. And that we’ve leapt on it with even greater alacrity over the past few months hardly comes as a surprise; who, through a global pandemic, would not welcome an unapologetically romanticised vision of floaty florals and cottage-style comfort? This is a look made for romping through meadows of wildflowers and for gathering harvests of kitchen garden bounty in picturesque trugs. For picnicking under trees in the dappled sunlight and for dipping toes in handy babbling brooks. It is, then, a world away from the harsh realities of life with the threat of a deadly virus.
