Let’s face it: being wrapped up in a comfort blanket is the perfect sartorial choice for January 2021. A national lockdown 3.0, plus rumours of another Beast from the East arriving to plunge us into sub-zero temperatures makes a duvet coat just the thing to stay warm, cosy and stylish on our allotted daily exercise jaunts.

Some tips to consider when choosing the right style for you. Firstly, buy as good quality as you can afford; if looked after, a quilted coat will last for years and years but cheaper options often lose shape after one season and offer inferior heat retention and wind protection.

Look for neutral, classic shades that won’t date to get the most out of an investment coat and one you can wear with any outfit – camel, navy, black and khaki are great shades.

Down or synthetic? The choice is yours, but it’s worth noting that many brands are using plastics from ocean waste, recycled wool and other innovative fabrics in their designs to improve their sustainable credentials.

Think about your daily routine and climate – do you really need a thermal, super insulating jacket if you live somewhere that’s mild for 10 months of the year? Or are you buying something that you can use when skiing, too? If you are on muddy dog walks everyday do you need something waterproof with lots of pockets? If you push a buggy would a hood be useful? Thinking about the practicalities of your purchase will ensure you actually get the wear out of it.

Sizing is also key – when it arrives, try it on with your thickest and thinnest jumpers. How does it fit? Look for those with poppered or belted waists to help you adapt the fit depending on your layers underneath.

Consider a quilted ‘mid-layer’ rather than an outer; a gilet or fitted jacket is a brilliant addition under a bigger waterproof, but uninsulated, raincoat.

Shop around – fitted, oversized, bomber, fishtail… there’s a style and shape to suit every body and wardrobe – go for a diamond quilting for a more vintage/country feel, or more modern boxy detailing for a cleaner silhouette.
