Wimbledon season has arrived, and with it, a fresh wave of tennis fever. Whether you're a casual rallyer or fancy yourself the next Emma Raducanu, London offers no shortage of stylish spots to swing a racket – that is, until rain inevitably stops play (this is England, after all).

From charming local courts to swanky private clubs, the capital caters to every level of commitment. Whether you're perfecting your backhand with a coach or just after a pre–Pimm’s knockabout, these are the courts to know. Just don’t forget your Fred Perry whites. We might not all hoist that coveted cup – but there’s no reason not to look the part, even if your game might send John McEnroe into a red-faced meltdown.

Wimbledon Park Tennis Courts

In the full grip of Wimbledon anticipation? Then head immediately for Wimbledon Park Tennis Courts, which not only are excellent, but also have the virtue of being a mere 10-minutes from the All England Lawn Tennis Club, where the actual championships take place, thus – we wholeheartedly believe – allowing you to soak up some extra tip-top pro inspiration on the court. The beauty is that anyone can book one of the twenty courts (ten of which are floodlit astroturf, the other ten plexi-pave).

Golden Lane Tennis Courts, City of London

There are many ultra fancy (for which read ultra expensive) tennis clubs that the sporty and keen can elect to join in London. We, however, have tried to cleave to a more egalitarian approach in this list – but even so, there are clubs and clubs. And this excellent one, which feels like an oasis amid a very cool urban landscape (brutalist masterpiece, the Barbican Estate is next door, making the whole thing feel a bit like an arthouse film set), is just £55 a month for access to its hard courts as opposed to thousands (plus walk-ins can book too).

Park Sports Pay & Play Tennis, Various Locations

Want to sharpen up your serve and volley? Simply set up a Pay & Play and book seven days in advance for a court at its floodlit locations across Hyde Park, Regents Park, Greenwich Park, Chiswick, Lammas Park and Pitshanger Park. Expect to pay between £6 and £15 per hour – and you can even hire a racket for a fiver an hour if you’re just getting started.

Queen’s Park

Queen’s Park has six hard-surfaced tennis courts – and the beauty is that you don’t need any kind of membership to play (however, if you do intend on becoming a regular, an annual membership will set you back £35.70 per year and lets you book five courts a week, up to four days in advance). Otherwise, it’s £11.70 an hour and £6.70 for concessions (the latter available for under 16s, students, OAPs, unemployed people and disabled people).

Campden Hill Lawn Tennis Club, Kensington

Campden Hill Lawn Tennis Club has been a cornerstone of London tennis since 1884. Boasting twelve top-quality courts – split evenly between indoor and outdoor – plus a dedicated practice court, it offers superb playing conditions year-round. A welcoming clubhouse, complete with bar and restaurant, enhances the experience no end (of course it does - who doesn’t like a post-game treat?). With 1,600 members and a nonprofit ethos, it's a sought-after spot – though expect a wait unless you’re first-team material.

The Gardens Lawn Tennis Club, Southfields

THE GARDENS LAWN TENNIS CLUB

Founded in 1903 by local Southfields residents, The Gardens Lawn Tennis Club remains proudly community driven. Established on land behind Southdean Gardens, the courts were swiftly built and play began within a year. The club’s guiding principle – tennis by residents, for residents – still holds strong today. Welcoming rather than exclusive, it offers a friendly, accessible environment for nearby players seeking quality tennis without pretension or long waits.

Parliament Hill Tennis Courts, Hampstead

You may not make it to SW19, but you’ll certainly get your full tennis with a side of London landmark experience here. With 10 hard courts available, the backdrop alone makes you feel miles from the city. Standard fees are £11.10 and concessions £6.70 per hour.

Clissold Park Tennis Courts

A north London favourite, Clissold Park’s recently upgraded courts attract a mix of seasoned locals and social players. There are eight porous macadam courts and two mini tennis courts, as well as coaching programmes available.

Brockwell Park Tennis Courts

On the fringes of Brixton and Herne Hill, these well-maintained courts are part of a buzzing park culture, complete with lido and coffee kiosk for post-match lounging. You can book via the LTA’s site, and the vibe is friendly, not flashy. Not bad £7.70 an hour.

Georgians Tennis Club, Twickenham

In a leafy corner of Twickenham, Georgians is a family-friendly club offering both casual and competitive play. The coaching programme is robust – perfect for juniors or adults looking to raise their game. A welcoming place to build skills or simply enjoy a laid-back game in picturesque surroundings. From £22.50.
