Tucked away on the Sussex coast, a company that started with one worried mum and a stainless steel flask has become the water bottle of choice for some of Britain's biggest sporting moments, as well as myself. WIth the school summer holidays now underway, and water bottles now a normal part of everyone's daily lives, I have been researching the very crowded industry for a new travel friendly, durable and safe children’s water bottle.

Back in 2006, BOTL founder Heather Nicholson, an industrial chemist and mum went looking for something safer than plastic for her son's water bottle. Having realised that plastics could leach harmful chemicals into drinks, most reusable plastic options weren't much of an improvement,

Heather used her knowledge of chemical composition to land on 18/8 stainless steel as the safest, most inert alternative. Recyclable, durable, and free of toxins. The plastic components also hold LFGB Certification, one of the strongest indicators of food-contact safety and testing to the German LFGB standard. Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011, was created because substances can migrate from food-contact plastics into food and drink. It establishes strict limits.

For most of its life, the company traded as One Green Bottle. That changed in 2026 when a rebrand to BOTL was purely about the name. The brand still operates from onegreenbottle.com as well as a newer botl.world address, and it remains based at the same Shoreham Port site it's always called home.

Sustainable


BOTL's sustainability claims are backed by external accreditation. In March 2023, the company announced its certification as a B Corporation, and legally embedded a commitment to purpose beyond profit. Replacement caps, seals and valves can be purchased to keep the bottle fresh and tip top. The bottle itself has a lifetime warranty and after the bottle has had a long and happy life it is 100% recyclable.

Botl and Britain's sporting moments


There is a good chance you have spotted a BOTL in an athlete's hand, as the brand has supplied water bottles for Team GB across the Rio, Tokyo and Paris Olympics, and the Winter Olympics.

Alongside its flagship Evolution sports bottle designed with athletes in mind, leakproof and fitted with a straw, the lineup now includes the Evolution V2 range, the industry's first customisable Epic JUG and an interchangeable BREW flask.
