Five years into being vegan, I’ve honed a roster of supplements that keep my energy levels high, my bones protected and my heart healthy. There are a multitude of benefits to a plant-based diet, but I’m not here to preach. If you’re already vegan-curious and want to support your nutrition with a few sensible additions, supplements can be a helpful place to start.

There’s a lot of scaremongering around the supposed nutrient deficits of a vegan diet. Many of these concerns, though, aren’t supported by the research. For example, soy milk, tofu, chickpeas and almonds contain more calcium gram for gram than dairy milk. And meeting your daily protein needs through beans, nuts and pulses is entirely achievable – without the saturated fats found in red meat and with the bonus of extra fibre for a healthier gut.
Another common myth is that ‘complete proteins’ come only from animal sources. In reality, combining foods like legumes with certain grains – chickpeas and rice, for instance – easily creates a complete protein meal.

I promised I wouldn’t preach, and as with any dietary change, it’s wise to do your own research, pay attention to how your body feels and speak to a medical professional if you have concerns. But if you’re thinking of going plant-based this Veganuary and beyond, here are the seven supplements I take - and if my quarterly Thriva blood tests are anything to go by, they’re working brilliantly.

Nutritiongeeks

Iron Energy+, £8.99
Iron Energy+

I rave about Nutritiongeeks to someone at least once a week – so affordable, trust-worthy and a great range. Start here!

Body Me

Organic Vegan Protein Powder, £38
Vegan Protein Powder

This was the first supplement I added to my diet when I went vegan, and I stand by it for the highest quality, organic ingredients (and it tastes fab too). A trusted source when I want to ensure I’m hitting my vegan protein goals.

Feel

Vegan Omega 3, £35
Omega 3

I’ve taken various vegan Omega 3’s before and these are the only ones that are truly odourless. Important for brain, heart and vision if you are not consuming oily fish regularly.

Feel

Pro Collagen, £56
Pro Collagen Type 2 For Joints

This is the first vegan collagen identical to human Type 2 Collagen, which is essential for joint and bone health. A tropical flavoured powder, it’s easy to digest and, three months in, I’m already feeling the benefits in my morning yoga classes, with less aches and more flexibility.

Ancient + Brave

MCT Oil, £29
True MCT Oil

Not strictly speaking a vegan essential, but if your energy is lagging, this will give you some extra zip.

Holland and Barrett

Ultra Woman Multi Vitamins and Minerals, £18.49
Holland & Barrett Ultra Woman 90 Tablets

After a lot of research, this is one of the most comprehensive multi-vits I’ve found, with high B vitamins, iodine and calcium – as well as tons of others. A one-hit wonder that ticks lots of nutritional support off my list.

Better You

Vitamin D Oral Spray, £8
BetterYou Vitamin D 1000iu Daily Oral Spray 15ml

At this time of year, I top up my Vitamin D with an easy oral spray, not just for my immune system, but for my bones, too. An easy ‘spritz and go’ option if you don’t love taking tablets.
