Maison Louis Drucker is widely regarded as one of the defining names behind the classic French bistro chair. Founded in Paris in 1885 by Louis Drucker, a Polish-born craftsman, the company became synonymous with the woven rattan chair and helped shape the visual identity of Parisian café culture that emerged after Baron Haussmann’s redesign of Paris created the broad pavements ideal for outdoor dining.

Woven terrace chairs

As we approach the summer months, the company’s woven terrace chairs are still in demand and can still be found at legendary cafés such as Café de Flore and restaurants around the world.

After fleeing Russian-controlled Poland with his family, Drucker trained in wicker and bamboo craftsmanship before opening a tiny workshop in the 20th arrondissement of Paris with fellow artisan Leredde. By the early twentieth century, Maison Louis Drucker had become a leading producer of rattan furniture in France, surviving economic crises and two world wars while many competitors disappeared.

Every Drucker chair is handmade using techniques passed down through generations. Production involves shaping the frame, assembling the structure, weaving the seat and backrest, varnishing, and finishing by hand. Traditional models use natural rattan such as Malacca or Manau cane.

International designer collaborations

Today, Maison Louis Drucker collaborates with internationally known designers including Philippe Starck, India Mahdavi, and Patrick Norguet. Contemporary collections such as the Republica and Beaubourg reinterpret the chair using aluminum and steel for increased weather resistance while preserving the visual identity of the chair.
