Falcon was created in 1920, making pieces by fusing porcelain onto heavy-gauge steel. Originally manufactured in the Black Country area near Birmingham, England, Joe Kleiner & Sons created the original enamelware brand, distinctively ice-white with the blue rim, the classic design is still instantly recognisable to this day.

British brand

The old British brand has now been sensitively revived. In 2011, the original collection was relaunched and immediately resumed its position as a pioneer. The company Falcon Enamelware was co-founded by husband and wife team Emma and Kam Young, who also oversee the brand's creative direction and product development.

Emma Young grew up in Birmingham in The Midlands, which was the workshop of the world, and factories and production always fascinated her. Having previously established the design agency, Kiwi and Pom in 2008, the couple had spent a decade designing cafe and restaurant environments.

In 2010, the search for a perfect enamel dish for a project led to a meeting with Falcon's then owner in a cafe on the side of the M1 motorway. In need of some love and attention and a contemporary upgrade, Kiwi and Pom were hired, before taking over the brand the following year.

Ovenproof and dishwasher safe

Enamelware itself was first popularised by artisan industrialists in Germany in the 18th century. It cannot burn. If you drop it, it may chip but it won’t break. Dishwasher-safe and oven-safe up to 530F / 270C, it can also be used on gas and electric hobs.

Durable and hard wearing

Though enamelware was briefly eclipsed by other materials, it is still highly regarded today as a sustainable alternative. Especially now with a growing reaction against plastic, the brand has relevance - being completely inert. The material is just glass and clay and steel.

Though the products are now manufactured in China, the Falcon showroom and office are in Clerkenwell, London, where the products are designed - and sold in over fifty countries around the world.
