Is velvet your unofficial uniform of the festive season? Or do you reserve it for those rare (read: imagined) moments when invitations to grand winter balls thud onto the doormat? Perhaps, on the other hand, it appears only in December, for a month-long adventure in festive luxe. However you wear yours, velvet is always special, its depth, tactility and wintry richness lending instant sumptuousness to an outfit. Dressed up or dressed down, we share the pieces we’re loving this season.

How to Look After Velvet

Steam, Don’t Iron

Velvet hates pressure – an iron will flatten its pile and leave marks. A handheld steamer (or a steamy bathroom) is the safest way to lift creases and restore its natural sheen.

Store it smartly

Always hang velvet on a padded hanger with enough space around it. Crowding can cause crushing, and folding can leave temporary dents in the fabric.

Spot-clean with care

Spills happen. When they do, blot – never rub – and let it dry before gently brushing the pile back into place. For anything more serious, leave it to a trusted dry cleaner.
