Rothy’s is a San Francisco-based footwear and accessories company known for its innovative approach to sustainable fashion. Founded in 2012 by Stephen Hawthornthwaite and Roth Martin, the brand emerged from the founders’ desire to create stylish, comfortable shoes that minimized environmental impact.

Eco-conscious fashion

Their vision was to turn recycled materials, especially plastic water bottles, into high-quality, durable products, redefining what eco-conscious fashion could be. Their breakthrough innovation was using 3D knitting technology to transform plastic bottles into high-quality shoes.

Initially, Rothy’s became known for its women’s flats, which became hugely popular for their comfort, durability, and machine-washable design.

Over the years, the product range has expanded to include clogs, trainers, loafers, bags and accessories such as phone straps - as well as Kids and Men’s collections.

Repurposing plastic bottles

The company has now repurposed over 179 million plastic bottles into products, reflecting its commitment to environmental responsibility.

In the UK, Rothy’s products are available directly via the Rothy’s UK website and in department store Liberty London.

As seen on celebrities

Rothy’s has built a surprisingly strong celebrity following, which helped boost its popularity early on. High-profile names who’ve been seen wearing the brand include The Duchess of Sussex, Katie Holmes and Reese Witherspoon.

More recently, stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Rachel Bilson have been spotted wearing Rothy’s clogs, styled casually for everyday 'off-duty celebrity' wear.

Rothy’s reached a major financial milestone in 2021 when Brazilian company Alpargatas (owner of Havaianas) bought a large stake, valuing Rothy’s at $1 billion.
