Autumn always brings with it a prompt to rationalise and reorganise our wardrobes, putting aside pieces that we’ll never wear again and highlighting what’s missing. So what better moment in the year for #SecondHandSeptember, which offers the perfect excuse to go a-wandering beyond the high street to unearth treasures with history, add character to our ensembles and extend the lives of pre-loved clothes?

Style & Sustainability

We all know that fast fashion is detrimental to the environment, as well as often not adhering to the ethical standards that we should all be demanding. Every year, millions of tonnes of clothing end up in landfill, and the textile industry remains one of the planet’s most polluting. Opting for vintage and second-hand is not only a way to stand against this cycle, but also a conscious act of style: a statement that values creativity, individuality, and responsibility in equal measure. (An aside: when buying new, do look into brands that offer repair services, thus extending the life of the new clothes you do buy.)

Fashion Flair

Unlike the homogeny of the high street, vintage shopping is all about embracing the singular. Each piece carries stories of past lives and, when slipped on, lends instant character and flair. Forget mass-production and seeing ten other people in your frock when out and about.

(This movement is, of course, not confined to clothing alone. The surge of interest in second-hand homeware is equally exciting, offering interiors that tell a story and reject the soullessness of mass-market decor.)

At its heart, second-hand shopping is a form of quiet rebellion against disposability culture. It asks us to slow down, to look closely, to find beauty in imperfection – as well, crucially, as prompting us to support small businesses and independent curators, all while reducing the carbon footprint of our wardrobes and our homes. No-brainer, no?

This is our pick of the vintage crop.
