FAQs
FAQs
Why are basket bags so popular every summer?
Basket bags strike a rare balance between practicality and timeless style. Lightweight, durable and endlessly versatile, they evoke holidays, farmers' markets and long lunches outdoors while working just as well with linen tailoring or denim in the city. Unlike many seasonal accessories, a well-made basket bag rarely feels out of fashion.
Can you use a basket bag in the city?
Absolutely. While they originated as market and beach baskets, today's designs have become everyday wardrobe staples. Choose a structured shape with leather handles or trims and pair it with relaxed tailoring, wide-leg trousers or a simple summer dress. The more refined the finish, the easier it is to wear beyond the beach.
What's the difference between raffia, straw and wicker?
Although often used interchangeably, the materials are quite different. Raffia is made from the fibres of the raffia palm and is soft, flexible and lightweight. Straw is created from dried cereal grasses such as wheat and has a classic rustic appearance. Wicker isn't a material at all but a weaving technique, often using willow, rattan, bamboo or other natural fibres to create a more structured basket.
How should you care for a basket bag?
Keep basket bags dry wherever possible, as prolonged moisture can weaken natural fibres and alter their shape. Store them loosely stuffed with tissue paper to help them retain their form, and avoid crushing them beneath heavier bags. If they become dusty, a soft brush or dry cloth is usually all that's needed.
Which basket bags are worth investing in?
If you're buying just one, look for beautifully woven natural fibres with quality leather handles or trims that will age gracefully. Designs from heritage makers and luxury houses such as Loewe, Dragon Diffusion and Muuñ have become modern classics, but there are also excellent handcrafted options from smaller makers that offer timeless style at a more accessible price.
