If your complexion is looking more peaky than perky and a sun-kissed glow seems like a distant memory, then a strategically applied highlighter could be just the bit of make-up kit your skin needs to restore its dewy glow as we emerge from winter.

Look for warm tones to bring life back to your complexion and for textures that melt seamlessly into skin for an illuminating effect. A new slew of balms, sticks, gels and liquid highlighters have popped up just as our dull winter skin needs a little extra help – and many come with bonus added vitamin-infused formulas to nourish as they sculpt and highlight.

Here are twelve of our favourites, plus tips on how to apply for a fool-proof subtle yet flattering finish.

5 Places To Apply Highlighter

The key rule to follow when applying highlighter is to think about where the light would naturally catch the contours of your face and enhance that effect.

Cheekbones

You first port of call is high up on our cheekbones; apply in a c-sweep either side of your eye from temple round to the highest point on your cheekbone to frame your eyes and lift your cheekbones.

Browbone

A subtle swipe of highlighter right under your brow bone will give a lifting effect, making your eyes appear bigger and more awake.

Cupid’s Bow

A dab of highlighter just above your cupid’s bow will help to give your lips a fuller, more sculpted look. You can also add a dot to the centre middle of your bottom lip for added effect.

Nose

Some strategically applied highlighter, in tandem with a bronzer, can visually sculpt your nose contours. Applying vertically down the bridge of your nose as well as across the very tip will give a slimming and elongating effect.

Collarbone

Your highlighter application doesn’t have to stop at your jawline. Apply a highlighter balm across your collarbones to draw light to your décolleté and create flattering angles.
