We talk to the founders of the online service making interior design affordable to all.

My Bespoke Room is all about great affordable interior design for everyone. Its founders, Laura Simpson (on the left in the picture above) and Diana Greenhalgh, believe that hiring an interior designer shouldn’t break the bank.

For as little as £95 per room, the website gives customers access to a dedicated professional designer who will produce a unique, bespoke room design based on individual tastes and style preferences – all completed in a hassle-free online environment, with a fast turnaround.

We talk to Laura and Diana to find out more.

Our unique platform lets you manage everything online. You can share documents, review designs and even share your favourite Pinterest or Houzz boards. All the while being able to message your designer and the team throughout the process. We even have a free personal shopping service so customers can shop their designs from multiple retailers in just one click, and we handle everything else.

We’re very proud to have recently completed the remodel of Top Supermodel Jourdan Dunn’s home, as well as designed our very first vegan home for TV presenter, Jasmine Harman. Our team of qualified designers are able to work with all styles and budgets to help you create your perfect home.

What was the inspiration for the site?

Diana Greenhalgh and Laura Simpson met when they both worked together at L’Oréal back in 2004.

Diana explains: Having bought my first home with my husband I was beyond excited. It was a doer-upper and I wanted to be totally house proud but not quite sure where to get interior design input I could afford. Laura was in the same position and we started to extensively research the industry. We discovered a huge opportunity as people either had to spend thousands to find help, or do it entirely themselves and hope for the best. That’s when My Bespoke Room was born.

When did you launch?

We launched our very first online interior design site in 2014. Since then we have made many iterations having designed over 1,500 rooms and being ranked No.1 Interior Designer on Houzz UK. We’re always striving to improve our service and offering, and regularly launch new initiatives such as, your room delivered and unpacked in just one day, and our express service where you can have your design back in just 5 working days.

What are your greatest challenges?

Interior design is an archaic and broken industry. It’s known for its lack of transparency and high costs and we’re looking to change that. Our greatest challenge is getting customers to understand they don’t need a designer to visit their home to be able to create a design that matches their needs (although we do offer home visits for those looking to complete entire homes). By using photographs, plans and even videos, our designers are exceptionally qualified and experienced and can create a perfect scheme remotely. It means clients are no longer restricted by where they live, and have access to some of the UK’s best design talent at a fraction of the cost in a convenient way.

What's your background?

Diana is a brand and marketing expert having worked for L’Oréal for 10 years across some of their most well-known brands. She is a consumer champion and active public speaker for female tech founders. Laura is a double RSA award recipient and patent holder with a background in product engineering having held senior roles at L’Oréal and Apple. Together with Lucy Henderson, their Head of Interior Design, the trio are transforming how people design their homes for the better.

Who do you admire in business?

Tania Boler, CEO and founder of Elvie. Elvie is all about improving women’s lives through smarter technology such as the world’s first silent wearable breast pump. She’s an impressive female founder with passion and drive to make a positive change.

Please recommend a website and / or app that helps you promote or run your business or that you simply couldn't live without.

We use Zoom daily. A large part of our team work remotely and it’s a great way to host online meetings so that everyone can take part and feels connected. We also use it for regular training and to host webinars with our suppliers and designers.

Where do you see the business going from here?

With the huge numbers of designer applications we receive, we’re now working on a project to alleviate the burden of starting a business. It’s full of training, support, and the tools to grow and succeed as an interior designer.

Have you put your company forward for an award before?

We’re very proud to have won the Houzz award for both service and design for the last three years running. We were also nominated for the recent Amara company blog awards, and are excited to have entered into this year’s GWG award as well.
