Jacqui Lane talks about the challenges bringing award-winning, organic, single-estate, extra virgin olive oil to the table.

La Bandiera is an award-winning, organic, single-estate, extra virgin olive oil produced in Italy and managed in London.

Our olives are harvested just as they are beginning to ripen in October in order to capture and preserve the characteristics so typical of olive oil from Bolgheri- full-bodied with fruity and spicy aromas. At La Bandiera we create our own in-house blend to make sure that the organic oil is perfectly balanced to suit the palates of our discerning clientele. Our website is where people can go to not only buy our oil, but to learn more about the harvest and process, the Estate, our stunning gardens and surrounding areas, and so much more.

What was the inspiration for the site?

We re-designed our website this year to reflect our growing business and to update it to encompass the new modes of shopping, namely e-commerce via Shopify and on Facebook and Instagram.

When did you launch?

We launched La Bandiera organic olive oil in 2012, and re-launched our website in 2019.

What's your background?

I was in the luxury goods business working in Asia for many years. Working with premium EVOO is a natural extension of this work and although it is a very competitive business, it is a pleasure to be working in Tuscany on the land. It is challenging yet therapeutic.

Who do you admire in business?

Karren Brady. I recently attended an event where she was being interviewed and she is an inspiration! I love how she persuaded her boss to buy Birmingham City Football Club and at 23 years of age was made the Managing Director of the club. She is now the CEO of West Ham United and one of the most high-profile businesswoman in the country.

Do you have a favourite business podcast?

There are so many from which to choose! As I am trying to improve my Italian language skills, I tend to listen to the Italian News. However, I like the podcast by Mary Portas “Work Like a Woman”. I love her energy and common sense approach plus she is placing kindness at the heart of business which is so admirable. She interviews some fascinating guests. Of course the Ted Talks Business is always a good podcast to tune into.

Please recommend a website and / or app that helps you promote or run your business...

Shopify is an invaluable tool for e-commerce, as it lets you host, manage and sell your product all from one space. It is easy to use and works across various social media platforms which is of vital importance nowadays.

What is the best piece of digital advice you've been given in regards to your showcasing/running your business online?

To create a visually stunning website that’s beautiful and original and that encompasses what our ethos is and also what the actual feel of La Bandiera is whilst being functionally intuitive for our clients. In other words, create a website that is beautiful to explore, easy to use!

What are your greatest challenges?

Keeping up with the climate change!

What is your motto?

“There is a solution for everything!”

Have you put your company forward for an award before?

Since we launched La Bandiera EVOO internationally, we have won multiple awards for its taste and quality; we just recently won a Gold Star at the 2019 Great Taste awards.

Where do you see the business going from here?

We were one of the first estates in our area of Italy to transition to organic farming and that was just the beginning! Although we are developing our product line to lavender and honey, our premium, organic, extra-virgin olive oil will always be the priority and we will continue to improve the quality. For example, we are now preparing the land to plant 200 more olive trees which will be of benefit to both the quality and quantity of our olive oil.
