What was the inspiration for the site/app/blog?

We are three sisters, Anna, Lucy and Sophie who launched Box of Hugs in 2017.

After each going through difficult times, including our own mother’s battle with a brain tumour, we saw a gap in the gifting market - finding a thoughtful gift, other than flowers, wasn’t easy. We thought of the surprise packages we received from our mother when we were unwell or under the weather, and Box of Hugs was born.

What are your greatest challenges?

We are all mums of young children and balancing starting and running a business around the kids can be challenging but we are really lucky to have the flexibility to enjoy being mums as well as pursuing our Box of Hugs dream.

What's your background?

Before Box of Hugs Sophie was a Freelance Digital Marketing Manager, Lucy was a full time mum but prior to that was Commercial Manager for an insurance group, and Anna was Ecommerce Manager for Laura Ashley.



Who do you admire in business?

Holly Tucker, the founder of Not On The High Street is a massive inspiration in the gifting world, she offers great ideas and support for businesses such as ours via her company Holly & Co.

Please recommend a website and / or app that helps you promote or run your business or that you simply couldn't live without.

Shopify has been a brilliant platform on which to launch our gift site. We also couldn’t operate without our Box of Hugs Team Slack group which allows us to ask questions to the team, give feedback and make decisions more quickly when we are not together. The App is brilliant as it enables us to keep in touch even when on the go - which is pretty often with all of our school/nursery runs and after school clubs. etc!

Do you have a favourite business podcast?

The Shopify Masters podcasts are really helpful for growing an ecommerce store.

What is the best piece of digital advice you've been given in regards to your showcasing/running your business online?

Understand your customers and talk to them as real people. The customer has to be central to your decision making and this involves knowing who your customers are and listening to them.

What is your motto?

The only way to do great work is to love what you do (Steve Jobs). And we really love what we do and what we offer.

Where do you see the business going from here?

We hope to become the go-to for thoughtful unique gifts online. We offer a range of gifts that suit both consumers wanting to send birthday, Christmas, get well soon or thinking of you HUGS, and corporate customers who are looking for gifts to thank clients, reward staff or celebrate events such as Christmas or an annual conference.
