Celebrating the strong bond between father and son is at the core of this brand, so lifestyle photography is used liberally throughout the site to help convey this. Our swim shorts collections are designed by theme and we showcase each of these within dedicated sections.

What was the inspiration behind the website?
The beauty of Australia’s beaches and a laidback family lifestyle have been a big source of inspiration. We looked at the colours of Australia’s great outdoors and the overall active way of life by the ocean to create a vibrant online space that could mirror the bright and bold style of our swim shorts.

When did you launch the site?
Our online store went live in February 2012 – my husband Jelle and I worked on it together over several months. We wanted it to convey the bright outdoorsy feel of Australia (and be extremely easy to navigate!).

What are your greatest challenges?
When we first started designing and developing the store, themes weren’t so commonplace, so we were creating a bespoke site, which proved to be tricky at times. Also, because it was a global store, we had stock in three different locations and we needed three storefronts for each of the regions. There was a lot of extra work involved in that.

Please recommend a website and / or app that helps you promote your site or that you simply couldn't live without
We have Shopify as our merchant app and we find it super easy to use – the backend is very straightforward. We also couldn’t be without Mailchimp for communicating with our subscribers – we’ve used various templates over the years but it’s always quick and simple to send newsletters out. And our favourite social app (like so many apparel brands) is Instagram. As well as our studio and lifestyle shots, we receive many pictures from our customers as they model their Tom & Teddy shorts at the beach or pool – we love to see these and share them with our followers.

What is the best piece of digital advice you've been given in regard to your showcasing/running your business online?
To develop engaging content that is tailored really closely to our audience. We’ve gradually evolved from a product-driven website to one that strives to resonate with our customers via topical articles and guides, all housed within our Tom & Teddy Magazine pages. By investing in content, we’ve definitely been able to communicate more directly with our audience.

What is your motto?
From a marketing perspective, it would be “Never be scared to try new things – it’s good to learn by trial and error!”

From a design perspective: “Take time to research a look and feel that truly reflects your brand values as this will help you stand out from the crowd.”

Yes, we entered the TasteTV Awards in the US and we were the Swimwear Award winner.
