Carolina Appelqvist, Chief Marketing Officer, tells us about the impartial product and price comparison service on offer.

PriceSpy UK & Ireland is a fully impartial product and price comparison service. PriceSpy scans thousands of stores to make sure shoppers get the best price on products without having to visit all the stores themselves. We are here to guide consumers to smarter buying decisions.

Carolina Appelqvist, Chief Marketing Officer at PriceSpy, talks about the challenges the business faces.

What was the inspiration behind the website?
The founders had the same need of making good purchases and avoiding the bad ones. Initially, the service consisted of facts and prices of products that they themselves had planned to buy. Today we list 5,520,000 indexed prices, 865,000 products, 6,910,000 product properties, from over 3,000 UK & Ireland stores. We have more than 200 people and operate in nine countries.

When did you launch the site?

We started out in 2002, as a small hobby activity in Ängelholm, Sweden.

What are your greatest challenges?

In the UK, consumers are used to comparing insurance, loans and - more so in recent years - flights and holidays. However, when it comes to shopping for products, it’s still extremely common for shoppers to jump on the first price reference that it sees on Google Shopping (usually the retailers which pays the most for advertising) or to shop at retailers which offer a discount code.

It takes time to educate people on the smartest ways to shop, especially when shoppers are constantly exposed to advertising tricks and biased product listings from the global technology giants. We have the challenge of establishing PriceSpy in people’s minds as a fully impartial service.

Please recommend a website and/or app that helps your promote your site

Consumer champion sites such as MoneySavingExpert and Which? are important to us as they share our agenda to truly help people shop smarter. Social media, predominantly Twitter and Facebook, are also very important for us to raise awareness of PriceSpy and encourage people to use the service on the website or app.
