The Good Hotel Guide

Highly respected guide to the best hotels in the UK, Ireland and Europe.

The Good Hotel Guide is an independent guide to the best hotels in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Europe. 34 years old and counting, the guide is owned and edited by Adam and Caroline Raphael (both award-winning journalists) with the help of Desmond Balmer, former travel editor at The Observer. Impartial and informed, the Guide covers everything from budget B&Bs and romantic hotels, to luxury country house retreats.

Find a hotel in the correct area by choosing from one of the regions offered on the home page (London, Midlands, South West etc.). Then you can browse, and choose a hotel that fits the bill. A well-written blurb is included for each establishment (including the things you really want to know, such as what you will be getting for breakfast!), and there are pictures, contact details and maps - all you need to get a good overview of the place. Reviews and recommendations are sent in by readers, but are backed up by anonymous inspections to keep everyone on their toes!

If you're using the search facility, make sure you tick the box that says 'search includes review text' as this will ensure that you get the best return with plenty of suggestions of places to stay.

You can buy the printed version of the guide for £18 including p&p, or for £2.99 you can opt to download the GHG app onto your iPhone. This offers a ‘search near me’ tool that will hunt for hotels within a range of 10, 20, 30 or 40 miles. Very useful, particularly as this has a recommended selection of luxury hotels.

Special offers are listed down the right hand side of the home page, and on the special offers page, as well as at the end of many hotel entries so it is well worth having a look for a bargain.

There are also lists of the best gastro pubs, B&Bs, and boutique hotels in Cornwall and much more, to give you further help in making a good choice.
