A round-up of honeymoon ideas worldwide with a private pool, from the Lake District to Tahiti and most points in between.

There’s something uniquely enticing about the prospect of a private pool, particularly if you’re on honeymoon. Whether it’s a hotel room with a secluded plunge pool or a romantic villa for two with its own gardens and pool, you’ll really appreciate the chance to cosy up together. Here Jane Anderson, editor, 101 Honeymoons, shares her top ten ideas worldwide to suit all budgets.

1. Anse Chastanet, St Lucia

St Lucia is a honeymoon favourite and hotels there don’t get much more romantic than Anse Chastanet. The rooms are scattered across the hillside with one wall open to the sights and sounds of the tropics and the beach boasts incredible snorkelling over colourful protected reefs. Book “Casuarina” which has a small private pool or splash out with a few nights at sister hotel, Jade Mountain, with its 24 infinity pool sanctuaries.

2. DDG Retreat, Spain

A short drive from Malaga airport, but a million miles away from the bustling Costa del Sol, DDG Retreat is a unique hideaway for adults only. Each of the three suites has a private plunge pool with views of the rolling hills and coast beyond. Check out the free nights offers for a last minute break – I can’t think of a better place to propose!

3. The Gilpin, The Lake District

You don’t have to fly away for a dreamy honeymoon – The Gilpin is one of my favourite UK boltholes. The Garden Suites and Spa Suites both have fabulous decks with a vast hot tub, candlelit at night. The spa is as exceptional as the Michelin-starred food and, if you can tear yourselves away, the Lake District is on your doorstep.

4. Le Colombier, Tarn, Southwest France

It’s hard enough to find a villa for two with a private pool in Europe but it’s virtually impossible in France. Book early to secure this charming one bedroom restored dovecote, complete with a private pool and bucolic views. Castelnau-de-Lévis and Albi are both a short drive away. With a week’s rental from just £702, it won’t break the bank either. Book with Vintage Travel.

5. Conrad Bora Bora Nui, Tahiti

Go on – spoil yourselves. Head to Tahiti and her islands where you’ll be blown away by the resorts, most of which are built on stilts above the Pacific Ocean, the planet’s most spectacular swimming pool. At the Conrad Bora Bora, stay in an Overwater Villa with steps from your decking directly to the ocean and a private plunge pool too. Travel with Turquoise Holidays, the Tahiti specialists.

6. Sausage Tree Camp, Zambia

A safari is magical - soak up the incredible sounds and sights viewing wildlife in its natural environment and relaxing back at base between game drives. Abercrombie & Kent tailor-makes the ultimate safari honeymoons but my pick would include a stay at Sausage Tree Camp, on the banks of the Zambezi River. Wallow in your own private infinity plunge pool as you gaze at the hippos wallowing in the river and perhaps glimpse an elephant wandering nearby.

7. Amanbagh, Rajasthan, India

Follow in the footsteps of the Maharajahs for a taste of regal luxury at the Amanbagh in Rajasthan. The pool pavilions come complete with a vast private pool and pretty courtyard garden. It’s best enjoyed as part of a luxury private tour of Rajasthan’s Golden Triangle – think the Taj Mahal, Amber Fort, Palace of the Wind and Red Fort - with India specialists, Enchanting Travels.

8. Gwel an Mor, Cornwall

Cornwall is a favourite amongst honeymooners, not least because of its jaw-dropping coastline and fabulous restaurant scene. Gwel an Mor is a five star self-catering resort overlooking the sea by Portreath Beach. Some of the spacious lodges have not only a hot tub on the deck but also a log burner for cosy nights in. It’s an ideal choice if you want to take the kids too.

9. Ponta dos Ganchos, Florianopolis, Brazil

Ponta dos Gauchos is one of Brazil’s most spectacular and exclusive places to stay. It’s set on a forested peninsula with gorgeous ocean views and has its own sandy beach. Designed with honeymooners in mind, the Da Vila bungalows each has an oceanfront infinity-edge plunge pool. It’s a foodie paradise too. Journey Latin America can tailor-make your honeymoon in Brazil to include a few nights at this special spot.

10. Denis Private Island, Seychelles

Up the ante with a honeymoon on a private island – and top it all by choosing the new one-bedroom Beach Villa, one of just 25 individual cottages at Denis Private Island in the Seychelles. It’s all about barefoot luxury at this long-time favourite which keeps getting better and better, and the snorkelling is spectacular. Book with Just Seychelles.
