The news for travel addicts is slowly getting better. From 4 October, the government will do away with the despised traffic light system and replace it with a simple Red List of countries.

And if you live in England, you can now travel without the threat of hotel quarantine to the Maldives, Oman, Egypt, Turkey, Kenya and Sri Lanka. So what are the trips to book now? Mark Hodson, Editor of 101 Holidays, picks some of the best.

TURKEY


Kalkan is one of the most charming small resorts on the coast of Turkey. If you fancy a stylish boutique hotel, you can’t do better than the family-run Kalkan Regency where seven nights B&B departing 17 October costs £810 pp including flights and private transfers. During half-term week, seven nights departing 24 October costs £788 pp for a family of four with Simpson Travel.



If you’d prefer a villa, Oliver’s Travels has 20% off Villa Meral (sleeps 6) in Kalkan throughout October and November starting at just £258 per week, equivalent to £6 pp per night. Club Med has some great deals at its resort, Club Med Palmiye, near Antalya in Turkey. Seven nights all-inclusive costs from £1,208 pp (saving £134) including flights departing 16 October and transfers. Children under 6 stay free.


MALDIVES


Could you use a trip to the Maldives right now? How about the small and secluded five-star Gangehi Island Resort & Spa where seven nights half-board in a beach villa costs £1,807 pp (saving £1,256 pp) including British Airways flights departing 29 October and transfers. Abercrombie & Kent has deals on a selection of luxury resorts in the Maldives in 2022. Seven nights on the island of Baros costs from £3,285 (saving £310 pp) between 11 January and 22 December plus there’s a free sunset cruise or dolphin cruise. Flights are extra.


SRI LANKA


What a joy to see Sri Lanka back on the map. How about a week in November at the fabulous Anantara Kalutara Resort & Spa? If you book by 31 October, seven nights half-board costs from £1,299 pp (saving £650 pp) including Heathrow flights and transfers with Tropical Sky.



Another way to experience this amazing country is on a Wildlife of Sri Lanka tour, taking in sightings of wild elephant, leopard, blue whales and sea turtles. KENYA




Kenya is one of the best destinations for a safari and beach holiday.. The Masai Mara and Coast private tour from Mahlatini is as stylish as it is adventurous. It includes stays at Hemingways Nairobi, overlooking the Ngong Hills, Ol Seki Camp in the heart of the Mara and Hemingways Watamu for barefoot luxury on the beach. OMAN




Another exciting addition to the safe list is Oman, where Cox & Kings has a nine-day tour, Oman: An Arabian Odyssey featuring forts and palaces, a night under the desert sky at Shargiya Sands, mountains, fishing villages and turtles nesting. It costs from £2,495 pp throughout 2022 including four-star accommodation, flights and some meals.


EGYPT




If the treasures of Ancient Egypt are calling, you can’t do better than a Classic Nile Cruise with Abercrombie & Kent. This five-night trip will introduce you to the key sights while experiencing the height of luxury on board. From £1,795 pp including flights.


ABU DHABI


Although we’ve been able to travel to Abu Dhabi for a while, it really comes into its own in winter. Even in the depths of December you can expect 27ºC and nine hours of daily sunshine. Five nights B&B at the five-star Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers costs from £633 pp, seven nights from £745 pp, including flights.
