Eight hot new single travel ideas for 2019 from Cathy Winston, Editor of 101 Singles Holidays.

The Christmas and New Year holiday period isn’t always the best time of year if you’re single. So, rather than focus on the negatives, why not prepare for 2019 by planning some exciting solo adventures?

If you’re not sure where to start, Cathy Winston, Editor of 101 Singles Holidays, has plenty of ideas. These new trips are all great options for solo travellers and include some of 2019’s hottest destinations.

Discover ancient worlds

The glories of Ancient Egypt are drawing visitors back to the country again, with Lonely Planet tipping the southern Nile valley as one of its top regions for 2019. Sail down the river on a traditional felucca to visit some of the ancient temples – after marvelling at the great Pyramids and Sphinx, of course – before heading to Jordan and Israel on this new 19-day tour from Tucan Travel. Around 60% of people on their group tours travel solo.

Priced from £2,119 plus a local payment of $300, excluding flights.

Step into history in Wales

Peter Sommer Travels is best known for its award-winning tours of the Mediterranean, but for 2019, there’s a new option closer to home. The six-night Exploring Wales tour is the company’s first in the country, telling the story of centuries of history, with invasions by the Romans, Irish, Vikings, Normans and English leaving their mark, but with Welsh culture and language enduring through the years. A specialist guide accompanies the trip as you venture from castles and fortresses to churches and abbeys, via Dark Age tombstones and Arthurian legends.

Priced £2,695, including shared accommodation in four- and five-star hotels with breakfasts, five lunches and three dinners, from 14 July. There’s also the option to have your own room for a supplement of £550.

Cricket in the Caribbean

England’s Test team are riding high after a series whitewash in Sri Lanka, so it should be a good time to join them for a tour of the Caribbean in early 2019. ITC Sports Travel says its group tours are hugely popular with solo travellers. Surrounded by fellow cricket fans, you will get guaranteed match tickets and you can mingle over drinks with pundits and former players, and have plenty of time to enjoy the Caribbean vibe and perhaps a game of beach cricket.

Priced from £7,295 (including single supplement) for the ODI and T20 tour of St Lucia and St Kitts including 11 nights’ accommodation from March 1 and flights.

Visit the edge of Europe

Head off the beaten track to the edges of Europe and Asia, to discover the history and landscapes of the region. Singles specialists Solos Holidays has a new nine-night tour to Azerbaijan and Georgia visiting the Caucasus Mountains and cave towns, plus wine tasting in one of the world’s oldest wine-producing countries and the chance to meet local families along the way.

Priced from £1,999, departing 7 May, with accommodation in a single room with breakfasts plus three lunches and dinners, and flights.

Highlights of Peru

Northern Peru has been tipped as one of Lonely Planet’s hottest regions to visit in 2019, but if you haven’t already ticked the glories of Machu Picchu off your bucket list, it’s just got easier with a new private tour from singles specialists Travel One. The 12-night trip also includes Lima and Arequipa, the Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, the Sacred Valley and Cusco.

Priced from £2,599, including flights, half-board accommodation (double/twin room for sole use), guide and local transfers.

On the rails in Russia

There are few better ways to see the world than on some of the world’s greatest train journeys – as well as exploring the destination more deeply, the travel itself becomes part of the experience. So a new group tour alternative to the Trans-Siberian Railway is perfect for getting a taste of Russia, from the Kungur Ice Caves in Perm to the highlights of Siberia and Ulan Ude’s Ivolginsky Datsan Monastery.

The 17-day tour costs from £4,390 per person with Regent Holidays including a single supplement of £395 and flights, departing on 30 September.

All-inclusive Turkey

Tourist numbers to Turkey are on the rise again, with travellers tempted by the beautiful coastline and budget prices compared to the rest of the Mediterranean. Singles specialists Friendship Travel has a new adults-only hotel on offer for summer 2019, The Raga in Side. Just 300m from the beach, where the hotel has its own loungers and bar, there’s a great spa and the whole hotel has been recently renovated. If you’re looking for more than sun and sand, Side also has a beautiful old harbour and Roman archeological sites.

Prices start from £690 per week including flights and five dinners with wine, or £995 for a week’s all-inclusive.

Northern culture in Leeds

Help celebrate Opera North’s 40th anniversary with a musical break to the company’s home in Leeds. The three-night trip with The Cultural Travel Company includes a string of varied operas, talks on the music by the editor of Opera Magazine, plus a guided walking tour of the city’s architectural heritage and Leeds Art Gallery.

Priced £1,175 per person (double room for sole use) including opera tickets, dinner with wine and private coach travel, departing 21 February.
