From her dusty family sheep farm in Australia to the madness of London, travel expert Alice knows better than most people how important it is to be connected to the world via the internet.

That said, she loves nothing more than getting away from it all with nothing but blue skies overhead and miles of red-earth tracks underfoot. Alice Callander co-founded Sally & Alice Travel Co, a luxury African safari website.

As much as Alice loves to entice you with their shiny new website, images of faraway adventures, boutique hideaways and blissed-out honeymoons, Sally & Alice Travel Co’s priority has always been real life human connections: booking clients into owner-run lodges with heart; discovering the travel industry's best on-the-ground guides and fixers; or taking clients out for lunch to understand exactly what makes them tick.

Sally & Alice Travel Co has grown steadily over the last seven years, expanding to cover new destinations in Africa and Asia such as Madagascar and Bhutan, and more recently updating and improving their website which now groups holiday ideas by experience - whether you're looking for an close-up encounter with a silverback, a private island hideaway or an adventure-filled road trip, you'll find plenty of inspiration on their site.

Through the use of social media, Sally & Alice Travel Co has been able to share news, travel updates and beautiful images with their clients and have found Instagram in particular an exciting tool to reignite people's wanderlust.

My favourite website… I still find myself looking to i-escape for inspiration - I have always loved their style and think they were one of the first websites to give really honest feedback with their 'highs' and 'lows' section. People appreciate honesty and it's always good to manage expectations. I also love Airbnb and Rightmove - a girl can dream, right?

My favourite app… Instagram - It's perfect for travel daydream fodder, Uber - I have become rather too accustomed to travel by taxi on account of their affordability... and Spotify, because these days my music taste ranges from nursery rhymes to Disney classics to Jamie XX. Also WhatsApp has been hugely helpful for me, allowing me to share pictures easily with my family and friends in Australia, free calls and also the ability to create different conversations with different groups.

My blog of choice… I don't really have time to read blogs.

My internet hero… Aside from the guy from Virgin Media who fixed the dodgy wifi in my house last week...ummm I guess Kevin Systrom who founded Instagram was a clever chap, but I had to Google who he was. Actually hold up, who invented Google is more the point - yes, Larry Page and Sergey Brin are my internet heroes. Google saves me repeatedly, on a daily basis.

My most recent buy online… tickets to the Royal Geographical Society - To hear Joanna Lumley give a lecture

Book just downloaded/ read… I am straddled between Philip Roth's The Human Stain, and Helen Garner's Everywhere I Look. The last book I read and loved was When A Crocodile Eats the Sun by Peter Godwin. Next on my list is Do No Harm by Henry Marsh.

Favourite tweeter… I do find Hugo Rifkind quite amusing... @hugorifkind.

Favourite instagrammer… my Australian friend Gigi Hopkins from @_itsbeautifulhere - She is very good at what she does and has deservedly created a real following. I also love who is from the same part of Australia that I grew up and takes beautiful photos, that often serve to make me very homesick!

Social media allowed me to meet… Some of my favourite clients. I was so thrilled when a couple based in Perth found us on Instagram and ended up booking an amazing month long trip across Southern Africa.

Most worthwhile newsletter subscribed to… I get hundreds of travel industry newsletters and whilst they're handy to keep up with all the latest updates and new openings I don't have a huge amount of time to read newsletters. I still get Conde Nast sent to me monthly. I spend so much time on the computer these days it's nice to be able to flick through a magazine with a coffee in hand.

Pet hate about life online… Obviously there is a real element of 'curation' that inevitably goes on with social media, a lot of 'here is my perfect family frolicking on a perfect white sand beach' rather than 'here is my wretched family screaming blue murder at Luton Airport at 4 a.m.'

Stand out online memory… We had literally just launched Sally and Alice Travel Co and were picked up to do a promotion / holiday giveaway with The White Company. It was a big moment for us to be taken seriously and to see our company named alongside such a well known and established brand.
