Coping with a month's worth of web traffic in a week post lockdown, the joys of working by the coast, Managing Director, Phil Beattie tells us more.

Luxury Coastal specialises in exquisite self-catering cottages by the sea across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, with numerous options available, from group getaways and luxury lodges to dog-friendly escapes, family-friendly homes and intimate holidays just for two. The uniting factor? Aside from the universal sheer knock-out style and comfort, all 200 properties are situated stunningly along the south coast within easy reach of the sea.

We caught up with founder, Managing Director, Phil Beattie to find out more.

We came up with the idea when…

The team had all worked together in the self-catering industry for many years. After months of consolidation in the market and with smaller independent agencies disappearing at an astonishing rate, we believed that there was a different way, and that’s how Luxury Coastal came to be created.

We wanted to be different from other rental companies....

Our focus is to offer personal service to our guests and owners. We always try to do things the right way, even if it's not the profitable way, to ensure our guests and owners feel valued and have a memorable experience. There are lots of other things we do differently behind the scenes too, but the word ‘fairness’ is one we use regularly about all aspects of our business.

The biggest challenge/s that we're facing during the pandemic is…

As for most businesses, our biggest challenge was, and is the uncertainty. As with most things in business, or life, we don't know what's around the corner; we focus on the areas we can control and spend time planning for all eventualities that we can predict. We stay true to our moral compass, always reverting to our values to ensure we are on the right path.

We've grown our business over the first 18 months by...

Offering an exceptional experience to those that interact with us. From our guests, owners and suppliers, we always concentrate on the service aspects of our business. From a growth point of view, this is measured by our owner base and ultimately the number of properties we can offer to guests. In the short time we’ve been trading, we have grown our portfolio to 220 properties, which is an incredible achievement.

The average day is spent…

I have real variety in my days and I absolutely love that. As we are such a small team, we all find ourselves doing lots of different things spanning all areas of the business. I do tend to spend a lot of time speaking to our owners or property owners who are thinking about partnering with us. Building meaningful relationships is one of the best parts of the job

The team consists of...

There are seven of us and we are all passionate self-catering professionals with an abundance of experience and know-how. Most of the team have performed various roles within the industry over the years which means that although we have specialist skills and roles, we can all add value to the business in multiple areas.

Our/my favourite quote…

The easy way is rarely the best way.

I am where I am today because of…

A passion for the industry that I work in and a conviction that doing things differently will add to our success.

I am who I am because of....

I would have to say my family, and then the experiences that I have had in life. My morals are more important to me than money and sleeping well at night comes a lot easier when you know you are doing the right thing by people.

The best advice I've been given...

The only failure in life is the failure to learn from experience.

In five years I’d like to be…

The Managing Director of Luxury Coastal. I’ve got my dream job with people that I respect and care about. I expect it would be a larger business in five years but as long as the values we have in place now are still in place then, I know I will be jumping out of bed each morning ready for a great day.

The thing no one ever tells you about running your own business online...

You can never over-plan. We were preparing for our first-year celebrations as lockdown happened and as much as it was shocking and hugely disruptive, we had our processes in place, a financial contingency set-up that all made tackling the unknown slightly easier.

Our biggest mistake and what it taught us…

Being too eager and getting ahead of yourselves and trying to force things to happen when they are not ready. There is no point pushing things that can’t be pushed, sometimes you just have to accept that things take time and time is something you can’t speed up or control, so we have to be patient.

The most rewarding experience we’ve had to date…

Coming out of lockdown we hit lots of important milestones as a business but overarching all of that was seeing the business flourish. Our website coped with a month’s worth of traffic in a week and the processes we use to operate passed the test. Website traffic has remained high and demand continues to soar, and although we are exceptionally busy, we still look for ways to improve on a daily basis.

The most extraordinary request you've had from a client booking one of your properties (if you can say)...

We often get asked if properties can accept all kinds of wonderful animals.

The rental that I/we'd like to book for ourselves and why...

Oh, that is a tough one. I really think it depends on the type of holiday you would be taking; I know for a fact the team would all have different ideas. For me, I’d say it’s too hard a decision to make, so I will sit on the fence and say that every property offers something wonderful and unique and that wherever I went, I wouldn’t be disappointed.

Favourite coastal instagrammer and why...

I recommend following Mad About Devon to discover Devon’s best locations and the secret beaches that are dotted around the coast.

Favourite coastal restaurant/pub and why...

I love The Ness in Shaldon, Devon. On a sunny day it is an amazing place to enjoy a drink and bite to eat with a view out to sea.

Favourite coastal store and why...

Bertie and Crew in Brixham, Devon. It’s owned by one of our ex-colleagues and is extremely popular with guests who visit the area. I am big fan of Becky Bettesworth’s art and they have a fantastic selection of her prints in-store.
