Founder and CEO, Christopher Sharpe, talks to us about the UK’s fastest and kindest insurance app, providing a simple and reliable way to protect the things you love in under two minutes.

With no confusing jargon or grey areas, Kinsu makes insurance simple and transparent. Kinsu also believes that insurance can be a force for good. Each policy you buy helps to support one rough sleeper get away from the street, together with their UK- based charity partner StreetLink.

We came up with the idea when… We realised that everybody hates insurance! It’s such a shame there is such a disconnect between how people perceive insurance and what it does, we think its beautiful, it’s a truly elegant system of sharing risk. It’s the essence of the sharing economy: the premiums of the many, paying for the losses of the few. We believed there was something missing from the world of insurance today and so built Kinsu to solve the problems facing insurance and make people fall in love with it again.

The biggest challenge is… The biggest challenge of starting a new company is clearly staying focussed. Kinsu wants to change the insurance buying experience, the insurance industry and the world but we have to do things one at a time and in the right order! There are so many interesting distractions that, like sirens luring us off course, are difficult to resist. but we are doing our best to keep on the straight and narrow and give us the best chance of building a company big enough to make a difference.

The average day is spent… There are no average days but every day will have its highs and lows, it can be very emotional when you live and breathe a young business and I feel every lump and bump along the way deeply - it’s difficult sometimes but it's my job to try and keep these emotions to myself and not infect the team with either my uncontrolled excitement or abject fear!

The team consists of… A band of weirdos, freaks and misfits - well endowed with large brains, tireless energy, peerless good looks and a common desire to have fun and make a difference in the world.

I am where I am today because of… Sheer luck! Most of us overestimate the impact of our effect, personal choice and actions when reflecting on personal successes and find someone else to blame for our failures – I don’t! I am fully aware that everything I have achieved in life thus far is down to pure luck. Mostly in regard to being born a tall, white, male in London BUT aided and abetted by having a big smile and not being afraid to use it!

I am who I am because of... My multiple, often repeated mistakes and eventual realisation that they are there to be learnt from as well as repeated.

The best advice I've been given... That decision making is underrated - it matters that you can make decisions, especially when you don’t have all the information required to know if you are right or wrong, which is most of the time - trust your instinct, decide and move on.

In five years I’d like to be… Still having fun and for Kinsu to be a force for good in the world.

The thing no one ever tells you about running your own business online... no one ever tells you anything about running your own business full stop, so we have made it up as we go along, trying to make decisions quickly and get sh*t done. Getting things done is an underrated skill, in my humble opinion.

Our biggest mistake and what it taught us…
Mistake - Listening to people who are supposed to know what they are talking about but charging you for that pleasure.
Learning - make it up as you go along, use common sense and don’t listen to people who charge you for their opinions. ·

The most rewarding experience we’ve had to date… Hearing other people pitch Kinsu with passion and energy - truly beautiful! AND selling our first insurance policy was incredible. It’s amazing that Kinsu has gone from an initial idea to an end to end insurance platform in just 12 months!
