With hairdressers still closed, here are some easy ways to care for your tresses at home.
With hair and beauty salons not due to open before July at the earliest, in a new beauty series, Lifestyle Editor Lydia Mansi will share the products, online tutorials and tips to tackle beauty maintenance at home – from DIY pedicures and facial to hair dyes and self-tan.
First up: hair. Whether you’re missing your weekly blow-dry or your roots have reached your ears, here’s a hit-list of hair essentials to keep your lockdown locks in tip-top shape – until your next appointment.

Blow-dries may be a distant dream but if you want to look a little more polished for your next Zoom call, In Styler has developed a super clever hybrid between a curling iron and a hair straightener. It gives the smoothing effect of a straightener, banishing frizz and flyaways, without losing volume. It can also be used to add waves for a beach vibe, with a ceramic tourmaline barrel to ensure the hair isn’t damaged whilst styling. A great option if you want one styling tool to give a number of different looks.

Endlessly glamorous and practical too, these 100 per cent silk, jewel-coloured hair wraps reduce the need for washes, protect the hair and prevent breakages. Perfect damage limitation until you can get back in the salon chair.

Step away from the kitchen snippers. If you are tackling an at-home coronacut, at least invest in the proper kit. These Salon Performance scissors have a dial tool to enable you to adjust the closeness of the blades, as well as a clever finger rest to ensure a steady hand – whether you’re going for a drastic shearing, or a simple trim.

Ten years after being discontinued, the Sap Moss range from Aveda is back by popular demand and could be just what your lacklustre do needs. Designed to ‘hydrate without the weight’, the newly formulated range includes a blend of Iceland moss and larch tree sap extract to nourish and quench dry, frizzy hair without weighing it down or making it feel greasy (a tricky balance to strike). Great for banishing fuzz, smoothing neglected split ends and the jasmine and cypress scent is like a spa in the shower each morning which, frankly, is the closest we may get for a while.

If your colour is looking lack-lustre, or you’re trying to restore your tresses after a botched home-dye job, Bleach London’s Reincarnation mask does exactly as the name suggests – it brings stressed-out, over-treated or faded colour back to life. With sunflower oil and wheat protein, not only does it smooth and hydrate, it restores strength and colour vibrancy, too. The perfect pick-me-up to tide you over.

Are you starting to show your true colours? Celebrity hair stylist, Josh Wood has a brilliantly innovative range of at-home dye kits and root touch-up products – from ‘smudgers’ to brushes – all designed to blend away tell-tale roots in-between salon visits. While your next appointment may be further away than you’d like, you can use this clever, no-mess brush applicator to apply one of four colours to wet hair. Simply blow-dry as normal and the semi-permanent colour will disguise any regrowth for up to three washes. Great for those not confident in tackling their own permanent home hair dye.

Legendary south-west London hair stylist Paul Edmonds has been releasing a range of IGTV tutorials, from how to neutralise a brassy tone at home if your highlights are fading, to an undone wave tutorial. And if you’re feeling brave, you could always try out how to cut a face frame…
