A useful, no-nonsense resource to find the perfect gift, with an app for iPhone and Android.

GiftGen is a useful online tool for finding the perfect gift and when inspiration is short on the ground. Rated No. 1 most useful shopping site in The Telegraph's '101 most useful websites', The Gift Ideas Generator is a no-nonsense search engine which generates link-throughs to websites offering gift ideas. The unique and clever design means you can enter specific parameters to search by.

To use the Gift Ideas Directory, you simply select how much you want to spend, select the age of the person you are buying a gift for, their character (for example outdoorsy or fashionable) and gender (which also includes couples). The site will then show the resulting list of gift suggestions in relevance order, with a set of links to web-shops, price compare sites and high street shops that can all be clicked on. You can also refine your search by selecting a specific category of gift, from things to wear to food and drink items.

It's welcome to see that you can opt for a spend selection of 'nothing', going to show that you don't need to spend money to give someone a gift. You'll find links to YouTube videos on how to make your own, along with other suggestions. Perfect.

For shopping on the go, GiftGen offers its visitors an app, both for iPhone and Android. The iPhone app allows you to save lists locally on your phone and also to email them on to friends, which works really well if you're trying to agree on a joint gift.

The site does not have its own products to promote and is therefore unbiased, and free to suggest absolutely any gift idea they like and there are currently over 3,500 suggestions from 1,800 retailers. The Birthday Present Ideas Directory includes such varied choices as 'Print your own free novelty voucher', 'Hot air balloon ride with champagne', 'Makeover photo session' and 'A goat for a 3rd world family'.

The brainchild of two college friends who are now in their mid-thirties, GiftGen was over 2 years in development, which involved much researching of gift ideas, websites and stores.
