We catch up with Wendy Snowdon, founder of TheFoodMarket.com, a new online market that is all about glorious natural food.

TheFoodMarket.com is a new online market that is all about glorious natural food: food that is made responsibly, sourced sustainably and not pumped with additives.

From truffle-infused cheese to organic wine, and raw coconuts to superfood powders, the merchants have a vast array of goods available. And you don’t even have to leave the house to get your hands on their wares - each of the merchants will deliver the goods to your door.

We catch up with Wendy to find out more...

I came up with the idea when… I realised my cupboards were full of the same old brands everyone else’s cupboards were full of. It made for dull viewing and dull eating. I wanted easier access to all the food and drink I really wanted to buy – health foods, gourmet treats and all those treasures you find at food markets and food festivals but aren’t quite sure how to buy again once they run out. I also wanted high quality and to have no chemicals in my food. I thought perhaps I wasn’t alone in all this!

The biggest challenge is… Doing a lot with a little. Modest budgets can breed big creativity though. And you get really good as asking people nicely for favours, and returning them.

The average day is spent… Tasting new products, improving the website, building our brand, implementing lessons learned and a lot, lot more. We squeeze a lot of hours in to the day.

The team consists of... Invaluable people that help the business in myriad ways. To name a few: Konstantine, my superstar right hand man; Audrey, our brilliant data guru; and Ludovic, our first-class merchant manager.

Our investors are also part of the team and provide us with golden nuggets of advice – they’ve built hugely successful companies such as feelunique.com, MoneySupermarket.com and Play.com, so we tend to stop what we’re doing and listen when those nuggets roll in.

My favourite quote… Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. – Einstein.

I am where I am today because of… The support of my parents and my husband, without a doubt.Good old-fashioned hard work helped too. More recently for the business, our team and our investors have played a crucial part too in getting us to where we are now: ready to launch.

I am who I am because of... A million things, like the strong work ethic instilled in me by my parents, the advice, guidance and shared experience assimilated over the years from friends, family, colleagues and confidantes, plus of course - a love of good food.

The best advice I've been given... Hurry up and launch!

In five years I’d like to be… At a party celebrating 5 years since our launch, wall to wall with the team, chefs, merchants and happy customers, all gleefully scoffing our products and chatting about how exciting their cupboards are to look inside these days thanks to us.

The thing no one ever tells you about running your own business online... It’s ridiculously easy and you won’t know what to do with all the spare time you’ll have. There’s a reason no one ever tells you that – it’s not true!

The most rewarding experience we’ve had to date… Every time we see the look on the face of someone tasting the merchants’ products for the first time. It’s a beautiful moment. We also love knowing we’re doing something to support small businesses and are making it easier for customers to discover their products.
