helps busy women discover their beauty product matches through its smart technology by offering personalised product recommendations, taking the pain out of beauty shopping. On the flip side the company gathers real time analytics for the multi million beauty industry. In less than a year it has grown a community of over 80,000 fans (with no marketing budget) through word of mouth and has won and been shortlisted for five awards through organic growth. We caught up with founder and CEO, Nidhima Kohli
, to find out more.
What was the inspiration for the site?
I have very sensitive skin, and I spent months trying to find the right face cream for me as I couldn't find a single source for unbiased and personalised advice so I decided to create MyBeautyCompare. At the same time, I know the beauty industry is very hungry for more precise and faster analytics so it was a natural step to fall into that too.
When did you launch the site?
We officially launched in March 2014.
What are your greatest challenges?
Our greatest challenge was to really offer personalised recommendations so a lot of data scientists, experts and developers have had to work behind our proprietary technology. Our next challenge will include rolling it out outside the UK.
What's your background?
I have a mixed background, from working for seven years in top investment banks for the CEOs in strategy and building a budget of over £6 billion across multiple countries to being an internationally qualified beautician. I love both.
Who do you admire in business?
That would easily be Avid Larizadeh, the co-founder of Boticca
and now at Google Ventures
, who has achieved a lot yet remains very humble. Avid taught me very early on to think big and her continuous passion for always looking for new challenges is very inspiring.
Please recommend a website that you simply couldn't live without
I can't live without Feedly
, it helps me save everything I want to read in 1 place.
What is the best piece of business advice you've been given?
Take some risks, only those who ever dare to risk big ever achieve anything big.
What is your motto?
Have passion and dedication in what you do and the rewards will follow.
Where do you see the business going from here?
We expect to go mobile and abroad to new destinations within the next two months.
Have you entered an award before? If so, tell us about it.
Yes I have entered a few awards which includes:
-The Reflect Digital Awards: We have always done very well in social media. We now have over 60,000 fans with a 0 marketing budget! We won some funding from that.
-We entered the Global Elance Awards for startups, we were one of the winners for UK and again won some funding from that and came second.
-We have also been selected as one of the Startups of the Week on Tech City News and one of the Top Rising Stars for 2014 by The Guardian.
-Now we are very pleased to be nominated as one of the finalists for the Good Web Guide Awards too.
Where did you hear about the GWG Awards?
I found it by reading some great inspiring stories of successful entrepreneurs.
