Anna Magee talks about Healthista, the health channel for women.

Healthista is the UK’s fastest growing women’s health website. Created by real women for real women, it delivers its readers news, features, blogs, videos and expert advice they can trust to make them look and feel better. We catch up with Healthista' s editor, Anna Magee to find out more.

What was the inspiration for the site?

As a high-profile health journalist I was constantly being asked by my editors for a site I could recommend that readers could trust to deliver impartial health information in upbeat ways to readers. There was simply nothing out there like that in the UK (though there seemed to be a number in the US). So I made one.

When did you launch the site?

August 2013.

What are your greatest challenges?

We initially went into business with the wrong person and it was a huge and expensive lesson. As a result we had to rebuild the entire site from scratch during the second half of last year, which cost a lot of money (money is a big challenge actually as we are still bootstrapping the site with our own cash though we are on the hunt for our first round of investment). Now the site has gone from strength to strength and is growing like a wild beast, so in hindsight, though we couldn’t see it at the time, it was the best thing that could have happened to us. That’s often the case with challenging times, though it’s hard to see it when you’re in the middle of the nightmare.

What's your background?

I am a women’s health journalist in newspapers and glossy magazines - my main clients are the Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail along with Marie Claire and Woman & Home Magazine. I’m the former Health Director of Red Magazine and the former Health Editor of Sainsbury’s magazine.

Who do you admire in business?

I admire Richard Branson for his focus on people over everything else. I truly believe that if your people are singing the song of the business and really get it, success is much easier. Keeping them happy and inspired by their work and by the business and making sure they’re always growing and challenged and learning in their careers for me is important.

Please recommend a really useful website that helps you promote or run your business

We work with Content Click and Teads TV for sponsored content and ad revenue. Also, without Google Keyword Planner, which is free and with which we do all our SEO, we would be in a lot of trouble!

What is the best piece of business advice you've been given?

Look after yourself first. I’m a chronic workaholic but I learned earlier this year that running myself into the ground with eighteen hour days was always going to end in tears and tantrums and a mini-breakdown, which I had in the summer as I was simply working too hard and not giving myself the things I needed so I had to drop everything, take two weeks off and go home to my family to Australia to really get my s*&t together again! Now, I prioritise things I love - going to the gym 5-6 days a week (yep, obsessed), meditating daily, eating delicious vegan food, going out with friends or my partner at least once, ideally twice a week, having a full day off digital a week and taking a couple of holidays a year. I’ve learned to make these as important to me as work.

What is your motto?

Do what you love, the rest will follow.

Where do you see the business going from here?

We’re looking for our first round of investment in the next six months to grow our team and build important partnerships with brands that allow us to deliver readers exciting, useful content on many different platforms that our production capability allows - social, video, blog posts, reviews and events. The possibilities are super-exciting.

Have you entered an award before? If so, which one, why did you enter and if you did well, tell us about it.

We entered this year’s Lovie Awards and won a People’s Lovie Awards for Best Health and Fitness Website and bagged a bronze in the overall Best Health and Fitness website category for Europe. The winners were announced on 13th October and the awards ceremony is at the BFI Southbank on 12th November.
