Dr Mark Ratnarajah talks about FindMeHealth, the new portal for private healthcare.

FindMeHealth empowers patients to take control of their own health online. It has been especially designed to target patients who are looking to fund alternatives to NHS treatment themselves, for example when not eligible for care because of NHS rationing or because waiting times are prohibitively long. We catch up with Dr Mark Ratnarajah to find out more.

What was the inspiration for the site?

In the summer of 2011 I received the terrible news that my mother had been taken seriously ill and was in urgent need of treatment. I wanted to investigate all options to make sure I would make the best choice. However, despite nearly 20 years as a doctor, I struggled to find useful, independent information on the best private doctor and hospital. I thought to myself that if I found the process difficult, how would people without direct access to medical expertise cope? I then realised there had to be a more patient friendly way of compiling healthcare provider information, and so was born.

What are your greatest challenges?

The biggest misconception our customers have is that they are unaware that they have a choice about their treatment. Often, users believe that the only way to access healthcare is through their family doctor’s recommendation, which is not true. We provide an easy way for patients to investigate, evaluate, compare and book a specialist doctor with informed choice.

What's your background?

I am a paediatrician by training and have worked in healthcare for over 20 years in the NHS and abroad.

Who do you admire in business?

Simon Mottram, founder and CEO of Rapha, a cycling sportswear and lifestyle brand. He has grown a global business whilst retaining the heart of a startup.

Where do you see the business going from here?

Our sights are set on growing our user base and range of health services both in the UK and internationally. We have learnt that our users value the service we provide, but we need to continually adapt to best serve our future customers as well. This is a constant iterative process and a challenge that keeps us fresh and focused. Our goal is to help patients understand the choices they have available to them.
