Paul Andrews of Family Business United talks about the global family business community.
Family Business United brings the global family business community together with news, views and insights from family businesses and their professional advisers. We talk to founder, Paul Andrews to find out more.
What was the inspiration for the site? A passion for the family business sector and recognition that there was a gap in the market to provide a good platform and share news, resources and best practice to help other family businesses survive for generations to come.
When did you launch the site? Back in 2011.
What are your greatest challenges? I love what I do so the biggest challenge is balancing work and life and making sure that I set realistic targets for myself and the site!
What's your background? I qualified as an accountant with EY and spent ten years with them before six more at Grant Thornton working with family businesses.
Who do you admire in business? Real people with integrity, honesty and clear values.
Please recommend a really useful website that you simply couldn't live without... For me, it would have to be the PR/journalist alerts sites that provide a wealth of great content for us to use and as a big believer in social media, Twitter has become an integral part of my day that I could not be without!
What is the best piece of business advice you've been given? I remember a family business owner telling me the following – “I don’t care what you know until I know you care about me.” This has stayed with me ever since and is part of our mantra, making sure that the family firms we work with can see the value and benefit in what we do and want to be part of it because we care about the sector, and care about them too.
What is your motto? Never give up as there is always a solution and treat people as you expect to be treated.
Where do you see the business going from here? We have growing plans to extend our reach further with more international content. The site has been built to accommodate regional features/bulletins and we are working on ways to source more global family business news.
Have you entered an award before? The GWG Awards are the first award that I have ever personally entered, although I was a runner up in the Family Business Ambassador of the Year Award three years ago where I was nominated by somebody else.
Where did you hear about the GWG Awards? On Twitter of course!
