Website of the Year

Dog & Pup

We talk to Jane Hogan, founder of Dog & Pup, the online store for people with dogs in their family.

Dog & Pup Store is the department store for people with dogs in their family. They work with trusted quality brands, they are big on service and definitely super-social. We talk to founder, Jane Hogan to find out more.
What was the inspiration for the site?
Jester (business partner and miniature schnauzer) and I wanted to be able to shop for dog clothes and accessories in the same way that we do for the rest of the family – in a clean, uncluttered store which helps us to choose well, and where products work as well as they look.

When did you launch the site?
March 28, 2014

What are your greatest challenges?
Our greatest challenge is actually that it can be a lonely business working from home. We counteract that with lots of walks (obviously), going along to co-working days, and by working hard on offline relationships as well. We know each and every brand owner very well and love and admire them all.

What's your background?
I’ve started up and run companies in innovation and consulting, and worked in marketing and business development in corporate finance, engineering, education and publishing – to name just a few sectors! Dog & Pup Store is only my second venture for consumers, following TASTECLUB which sells artisan food and drink from the Great North.

Who do you admire in business?
Amongst business leaders it has to be Gerry Robinson. He elevates the obvious to an art form (and I’m not being rude, because the obvious is completely not obvious to most of us until it’s pointed out by a genius like Gerry).

Outside of planet TV, I admire fund raisers hugely – it’s hard enough to get paid for products and services!  It is said that fund raisers are born, not made, and I agree that they’re a force of nature. Alongside Dog & Pup Store I work at St Oswald’s Hospice in Newcastle upon Tyne.
It’s a privilege to work alongside the fundraisers –  and the clinical staff who understand people in a way we should all aspire to.

Please recommend an app that you simply couldn't live without.
I’ll give you the most recent tools I’ve discovered because otherwise you couldn’t stop me. allows me to shoot content across every platform – my own and other good stuff I come across. Helps when you’re a super-social store like Dog & Pup Store!  I just started playing with Canva – makes every presentation or banner look like it was made by HubSpot (whoops did I just slip another in there??)

What is the best piece of business advice you've been given?
The best piece of advice I’ve been given for business (and life) is ‘focus 100% on the things you can affect, don’t worry about the things you can’t.’

What is your motto?
My teams will tell you my motto is ‘it’s all about the numbers’, because ultimately it really is, oh and ‘if you’re making mistakes it means you’re doing something right too’

Where do you see the business going from here?
We want to continue to collect only lovely customers (100% track record on that to date) and to keep sharing products and insights we love related to dogs and family. If we keep doing that our family will get bigger, but we’ll still have room for everyone.

Have you entered an award before?
No we’ve not entered an award before. We entered this award because we wanted the feedback from the judges really on how we can get better.

Where did you hear about the GWG Awards?
We’ve always got The Good Web Guide newsletters – where else would we find the coolest new apps and websites?!
