We catch up with Dominic Wood, Co-founder and CEO of Bioepic Ltd., the fitness company set to launch this Summer.

Bioepic Limited will be the World’s first company to combine a natural supplement that has multiple health benefits with an App that allows people to see the changes. Set to launch this upcoming Summer, Bioepic aims at enabling sportsmen and women to improve their performance, endurance, recovery and mental alertness.

We catch up with Dominic Wood, Co-founder and CEO, to find out more...

I came up with the idea... Bioepic Ltd. is the world’s first company to combine food and drink supplements with technology to track exactly what affect they have on your health.

One of the co-founders of the company, Richard Wood has spent much of his career researching why natural diet allows isolated population groups around the world to avoid age-related rises in blood pressure. This worldwide research identified it was epicatechin-rich foods like apples and cacao that were having a hugely beneficial effect on the cardiovascular health – it all goes back to the famous saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

We had talked about ways bring an epicatechin based product to the mainstream market for a while. However, it was when we had the idea to marry a product with an app that proves the benefits that we realised we were really onto something. The smartphones most of us carry around every day have such incredible capabilities, we thought why not use the technology people already have to measure health benefits of foods?

The biggest challenge is… We are doing something truly innovative, and because it has never been done before there is no template to follow, which means there are almost too many challenges to pick out just one. Starting from scratch we had to get the product formula right, develop a cutting-edge medical grade fitness tracker, put production processes in place that meet the stringent standards, get branding right, coordinate distribution, build a team – every day seems to have a fresh challenge, but that’s what makes start-ups so exciting.

The average day is spent… We’re so close to launching our first product that the average day at the moment is pretty hectic. Aside from getting agreements in place with investors and worldwide distributors, we’re also developing new products in the EPIC range and continually improving the technology behind our health tracker apps to bring up to medical grade. It is hard work, but at this stage of the business there are lots of “Eureka!” moments to keep it exciting.

The team consists of… When we were initially getting the business and the concept off the ground, the team consisted of four co-founders. This worked very nicely as we each had our specialism, bringing together expertise in the science, technology and commerce.

Our first product, EPIC Sport, is due to launch this summer and the early attention the product has attracted means we have had to scale up our operations quite quickly. We are now a team of 14, including developers, professors and creatives, and it is exciting to be around a team that shares the founders’ enthusiasm for what we do.

My favourite quote… “The best way to predict the future is to create it,” Abraham Lincoln.

I am where I am today because of… I have made my fair share of mistakes over the years, but I am where I am today because I learned from every one of them. I think that is important in life and in business.

I am who I am because of... My family.

The best advice I've been given… Wise words from Mr Vanilla Ice: “Stop, collaborate and listen.” There is no point in working with experts if you’re just going to jump in without listening to their advice.

In five years I'd like to be… The next year or two are going to be huge for us, as our various products finally launch to market. We’re already talking to some of the biggest distributors in the world, so I would like to think that in 5 years EPIC will be a brand that is recognised on the shelves around the world with a loyal army of customers who are experiencing the health benefits of epicatechin.

The thing no one ever tells you about running your own business… The thing that nobody told me but I have quickly learned is the importance of always keeping focused on the long-term picture. Working on a start-up you are inevitably going to be hit with a million and one different little challenges daily and they can be demanding and distracting. It is tough, but you need to keep in mind that they are all just little hurdles on your way to creating a business with real value.

The most rewarding experience we've had to date… The most rewarding experience is actually one that we keep having over and over. During the last couple of years we have regularly demonstrated the product to potential business partners and investors, and the moment that they “get it” is really exciting. The effects of EPIC Sport reach a peak at about 2 hours after consumption, so to be able to give someone a sample and then use our app to show that their cardiovascular age drops by 10 years during the course of a meeting is pretty incredible.
