Google SketchUp

Design your own furniture and home by creating accurate 3D designs and architectural drawings online.

Google SketchUp is yet another string to Google’s ever more impressive bow, allowing users to create, modify and share 3D models of anything they like online.

Want to design your own piece of furniture, but unsure where to start? Want to re-design your garden without spending a fortune on a garden designer? Aimed at everyone, including those outside design or architectural professions, Google Sketchup has been built to make design accessible to all and is explained comprehensively via a number of Video Tutorials, divided into those new to Google Sketch up, those familiar with Google Sketchup and those who are experts.

For beginners, the key tools to remember when designing your space or object are: the Orbit, which allows you to view your design three dimensionally from all angles; the Zoom, which is fairly self-explanatory; and the Pan, which allows you to move from side-to-side and up and down. Just draw your shape, pull it into 3D then use the various other tools to create an architecturally accurate design – all by yourself! There are obviously various stages which you can move along and it will take a while to become an advanced user. Once you’ve got the hang of it, however, there is little to stop you becoming a real designer, with proper sketches and everything – the only thing now is to get your building skills up to scratch.
