Orla Kiely’s new book, Pattern
, is a beautifully bound book covered with a distinctive grey, white and yellow flower pattern. It is a demonstration, before one even opens the book, of just how powerful pattern can be, and an asset to any coffee table.
The book’s author, Orla Kiely knows her stuff when it comes to pattern. During the course of her career, she has designed ceramics and wallpaper for Habitat and sat on the Dulux Design Council. The Orla Kiely brand, meanwhile, continues to grow internationally, producing ready-to-wear collections alongside homeware, furnishings, luggage and accessories, as well as signature bags.
Orla's career began at Dublin’s National College of Art and, since then, she acted as a visiting lecturer at the RCA and Chelsea College of Art, judged for the UK Graduate Fashion Week Industry and Media Awards and been awarded with the Irish Tatler Woman of the Year for design, two UK Fashion Export Awards and the UK Fashion Exports Gold Award. Recently she was honoured the prestigious title of Visiting Professor of Textiles at the RCA.
Her first book, published this September by Octopus Books, is more than just a book of pretty pictures, though it is certainly that. Approachable and knowledgeably written, Pattern
combines autobiographical detail with observations and information, providing an insight into Orla’s creative process through chapters, covering Life, Inspiration, Colour, Print, Collections and Home. Whether it is for fashion or interiors, pattern has been a dominant force in Orla Kiely’s life. The impact of scale and proportion, rhythm, texture and dimension of colour are the things that occupy her mind on a day to day basis. As she says, “Pattern is not a trend for me, to be taken up one minute and abandoned the next when the winds of fashion change. Pattern is in me. It is my life.”
