Oz Clarke says 'A wine list worth reading, full of information and provocative opinion'

The Big Red Wine Company specialises in top French wines from the Rhône Valley and other regions of France, as well as a selection of great wines from Italy and Spain. They sell wine by the bottle or by the case and can mix cases at no extra cost. Online ordering is available but they are keen to build up a rapport with the client and are always happy to discuss requirements.

The company is rated highly by Oz Clarke in his 250 Best Wines Wine Buying Guide 2009 for its 'Intelligently chosen, reliably individualistic wines from estates in France, Italy and Spain ....... And they're not overcharging.'

Founded in 1998 by James Bercovici, who had intended on following a legal career. However, he found the wine trade to be a good deal more agreeable and The Big Red Wine Company was launched. The Bercovicis travelled the world, visiting the greatest vineyards but they settled on concentrating all their efforts into importing initially from France alone. They felt France offered the highest quality and widest range of styles and whilst concentrating on a smaller area, they could offer better value.

You can click on the wine search facility or narrow your search down to one particular country or, if you are feeling lucky, you can use their CaseMixer software to mix a case at a specified price (and any other criteria you may want to set). You can read about vineyards and the wines they offer.

Wines include a range by Xavier Vignon, a master blender for Moet et Chandon, who travels to over 300 estates advising on viticulture and vinification. Xavier bottles wine under his own label, one of which is Début, a non-vintage blend of wines sourced from both the Rhône and the Languedoc. It's oak-aged and powerful, offering great value for money (recommended by Oz Clarke).

The list includes Chateauneuf-du-Papes produced by Chateau de Beaucastel, Domaine de Cristia and Raymond Usseglio, which has been highly rated by Robert Parker, who says that 'they can drink well for a decade.'

The Big Red Wine Company advises on cellar planning and also offers wine storage.
