Time Out

Time Out has a well-conceived, exciting site.

This site condenses and combines Time Out's magazines and city guidebooks on one site to give an overview of eating and drinking in many tempting destinations. It's graphic-intensive, although not particularly chic, but it moves tremendously quickly. It's easy to read and the text is punchy and amusing. On the home page, click on London's Listings at the top right for the city guide, updated weekly. To peruse the guidebooks, click on your preferred city in the list down the left of the page. Do not go to the London city guide if you want the week's latest reviews. Unfortunately, some sections contain outdated reviews, and text lifted from the 1998 London guide, but the site remains a great quick reference for addresses and phone numbers, and their coverage of cuisines and price points is hard to beat.

Special Features

London Listings The eating and drinking section of the weekly magazine is reproduced here, along with other arts and entertainment information. The focus is the latest openings of restaurants and bars, but there may also be a themed round-up of the critics' top venues on a subject such as Valentine's Day.

City Guides A useful section to check if you are planning a trip, whether it be to Scotland, Shanghai or Sydney. There are 31 city guides in all, covering several continents and providing a reasonable overview of the dining scene in each area. They need more frequent updating, though: recent moves of chefs can perhaps be forgiven, but John Torode left Bluebird ages ago.

Other Features

An editor's update, current arts and entertainment news in various cities, travel magazine, Time Out book sales, student guide, keyword search facility, email survey and more.
