Support Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and the Fish Fight to give fish, fishermen and the consumer a better deal.
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is doing it again and this time with the Fish Fight Campaign. Around half of the fish caught by fishermen in the North Sea is thrown back overboard as they have little commercial value and given that discards aren't monitored, it's difficult to guage the number being trashed. The EU estimates that between 40% and 60% of a total catch is discarded.
The quota system protects fish stocks by setting limits on how many fish of a certain species (cod, haddock, plaice) should be caught but fishermen will catch these accidentally nevertheless. They have no choice but to throw them overboard before they dock.
SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN
Hugh wants to address this needless and wasteful act and is looking for your support, seeking to change policy so that it works for fish, fishermen and the consumer. Sign the petition online and your name will be added to a letter that will be sent to Commissioner Maria Damanaki, members of the Common Fisheries Policy Reform Group, and all MEPs. You should also write to your MP and tell your friends.
TRY SOMETHING NEW
Many of the fish that are discarded have fallen out of fashion and part of the Fish Fight is to get us to diversify our eating habits. In the UK, cod, salmon and tuna account for about 50% of the fish that we eat whilst unfashionable fish such as flounder, dab, coley and pouting are overlooked. See Jamie Oliver's top recipes for unfashionable fish.
