Remember the days before the Internet? When you had to actively solicit recommendations from friends, relatives, those living across borders and beyond continents? Yes, the globalisation of the digital age may have its downsides, but a plethora of handy hints from unbiased reviewers certainly isn’t one of them. Here are our top recommendations.

PRODUCTS

REVIEW CENTRE
www.reviewcentre.com

Products are this site’s USP, with over a million reviews to its name, it’s the very definition of the comprehensive all-rounder. A myriad of product types are covered, amongst them electronics, entertainment and there’s even travel for those looking further afield than Tripadvisor.

FILM

TOTAL FILM
www.totalfilm.com

Had enough of Rotten Tomatoes? Then look no further than Total Film, the site that offers a seriously detailed insight into everything movie related. User reviews are but one cog in a seriously well honed wheel, joined by the latest movie trivia, profiles of actors and their work, and there’s even some really rather enjoyable lists - Funniest Buddy Cop Movies for example, or Best Disney Song Covers.

RESTAURANTS

HOT DINNERS
www.hot-dinners.com

This site may be at a nascent stage but praise for its excellent reviews section is well deserved. A previous GWG Awards shortlister; not only does the site aggregate a handy round up of critical opinion, it also does its own rekkie, offering up reviewers who a) really know their stuff and b) really know how to write.

HARDEN'S
www.hardens.com

Since 1992, Harden's has invited "ordinary diners" to submit their own restaurant reviews, and it is on these that the Hardens reviews and ratings are based. Described by The Daily Telegraph as a 'foodies' bible', Harden's lets you search for the best places to eat in London and throughout the UK by postcode or area, price or quality of food or cuisine and gain an overview of each one, based on other diners' feedback.

WINE

DECANTER
www.decanter.com

If wine is your poison, then we strongly recommend Decanter. Written by resident experts such as Stephen Spurrier, the notes come with point scores and concise descriptions with the requisite descriptions such as tannis and tight. An excellent resource for those looking to learn more.

TRADESMEN

RATED PEOPLE
www.ratedpeople.com

Tradesmen in particular can be hit and miss, not to mention the horror stories of rogue traders; that’s where personal recommendations are particularly useful, cue those rated in their hundreds; from the niche, to the easily repaired, whether you're looking for a roofer or a flooring specialist, this much lauded site is all about karma. Repay good work by recommending a job well done, and their work will pay you back.

LOCAL BUSINESSES

YELP
www.yelp.co.uk

It may seem like an obvious choice but Yelp deserves a mention for its local business reviews, not to mention the handy accompanying app. Divided into cities, it provides an overview of restaurants, bars and shopping. Should you run into trouble there’s even a medical section, and automotive if you breakdown. Handy for a day out.
