When did you launch the site? What changes have you made since launching the site?

The site was launched in January 2010. We have gone through 2 major redevelopments of the site since its launch. We have introduced the property supplier’s directory and also we have recently partnered with a property deals company. They bring below market value deals to our subscribers.

Are the challenges you face now different from when you launched?

We have learnt a lot since we first launched the site. So, we can build on this knowledge to further build the business. Initially the challenge was for people to take us seriously! Now with 7 years under our belt we don’t have an issue with that. We can prove our success and this helps when we want to work with new partners.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned since launching your website?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that running your own business sometimes isn’t easy. Like anything there will ups and down, but if you keep going and follow your plan you will eventually get there. Keep monitoring your results to make sure you are on track and the business is growing in the right direction. Keep working smart and not hard!

Who do you admire in business? Have they influenced the way you work/your business plan?

Richard Branson – I love his determination to succeed, he is obviously passionate and loves what he is doing. He’s got a great fun aspect to business, for example, the Virgin broadband vans all have names, Marlon Vando, Lee Van Cleefe for example. It makes me laugh every time I see one. Richard Branson seems to have fun with a serious intent and doesn’t mind making fun of himself. I try to ensure that we have fun with our business, it’s important to keep enjoying what you’re doing.

Please recommend a website and / or app that helps you promote or run your business or that you simply couldn't live without.

Facebook is a fantastic tool for our business. We can keep in touch with other property investors. It also helps us to keep up to date with property news. We also like to promote our articles and blog posts on Facebook, so it’s a great way to get some visibility.

What advice would you give to someone setting up a business online today?

Make sure you do thorough research on your market and the audience. Check out your competitors. Put together a business plan and follow it. Understand how much money you will have to invest and what the returns will be.

Where do you see the business going from here? Have those goals changed since launch?

We’re excited to have just started working with a new marketing agency. They are going to help us to develop the website and to assist with the strategic direction that we need to take. We are bringing in new experts all the time to offer advice to property investors. We are also currently developing a directory of property suppliers to help build the power team of an investor.

The goals have changed since the launch as we’ve learned more about what our audience needs. I think it’s important to constantly look at your goals and business plan and adapt accordingly.
