Walkit.com

Unless you had the misfortune to wake from uneasy dreams this morning and found yourself transformed into Jeremy Clarkson, this website will be of interest to you. Walkit.com is for those of you who haven't forgotten that it is still possible to do something with your legs other than squeeze them into a hunk of metal and drive them (and you) straight into the nearest traffic jam.

This site is very simple: it tells you how to get from one place to another on foot. And it gives you the option of choosing the ‘direct' or the ‘less busy' route. All you have to do is put in where you are walking from and where you are walking to, press the go button and you will be given the following information: distance, walking time (slow, medium, fast), the calories burnt and the carbon dioxide you will have added to the world if you had taken the car, a tax or the bus.

At the time of writing, there are twelve cities on the site, including Aberdeen, Cambridge, London and Sheffield. There are plans to add more.

So you live in one of the world's greyest, wettest countries, where a walk is about as pleasurable as a trip in the car. No matter. It's good for you. So come on, quit your moaning, lock the garage door and get your Kagool on. You know there's a passionate pedestrian within you just bursting to get out onto those damp, unforgiving pavements.
