Award-winning photographer Matilda Temperley, who is sister to the fashion designer Alice, is publishing her third book, The League of Exotic Dancers – Legends of American Burlesque, this month. It’s one to look out for; her sell out book ‘Under The Surface – Somerset Floods’ won the Royal Photographic Society’s Vic Odden Award in 2015.
The League of Exotic Dancers – Legends of American Burlesque

When Matilda isn’t taking photos, most of which are inspired by marginalised societies, she spends her time making Somerset Cider Brandy. Here she talks about internet trolls, guilty pleasures online, why she unfollows people and how her favourite camera app makes her a nicer person.

My favourite website... The National Geographic - I can easily while away some time on this site. It is both informative and beautiful and there are always interesting stories to distract you from a working day. ASOS for shopping is also a guilty pleasure.

My favourite app... Leica Q - This has revolutionised my working day. It allows my camera to talk directly to my phone and so I can send pictures to people immediately or when I am sitting on a train with nothing better to do. It makes me send out pictures that I would completely forget to do otherwise so it makes me a much nicer person.

My blog of choice... With Instagram and facebook, I rarely find the time to look at blogs. I do have a tumblr account that I have not used for a very long time though. If I come across blogs on the internet, it is usually something to do with alcohol which is probably because my family business is making cider for Somerset Cider Brandy.

My internet hero... I am not sure any of my heroes are directly related to the internet. Highlighting climate change is up there though.

My most recent buy online was… A LEE filter adapter ring for my camera - I brought it on Amazon in order to attach my filters on a new lens and capture all the summer landscapes. It has been sitting on my kitchen table for a few weeks already as I have yet to road test it.

Book just downloaded/ read... ‘A History of Modern Britain’ by Andrew Marr - It is a brilliant book that I am halfway through. It is eye opening and easily digestible. I bought the book rather than downloaded it. I have never read a book via a screen. I still love the real deal.

My favourite Tweeter… I don't ever look at twitter. It is a feed too far for me.

My favourite Instagrammer... I love adventurers and photojournalists on Instagram; as well as paramotoring-related Instagram feeds. Avaunt Magazine and Paul Nicklen are favourites because of their brilliant captioning.

Social media allowed me to meet… some magazines that I have then worked with. Mostly Instagram reminds me of what people are up to and where in the world they are. This definitely helps me stay in touch.

Most worthwhile newsletter subscribed to… I only subscribe to the National Geographic - I went through a purge of all subscriptions because I felt bombarded by emails.

Pet hate about life online… Selfies. I am guilty on occasion but I hope not of the pouting and posing ones that create a world of self-obsession. I unfollow anyone that posts these types of images too often.

Stand out online memory... when I wrote an article for the Observer/Guardian on irresponsible tourism in the Omo Valley in Ethiopia - It opened my eyes to the murky world of internet trolling. I found my words and pictures being used on lots of blogs. In a couple of cases the blogs used my words as their own and credited the images making the article look like an attack on me. I soon got savvy and now I am disappointed if my articles don't provoke a reaction.
