RootsWeb Surname Lists

To make a post on this international but American dominated list, you first have to set up an eight-character nametag, which is easier said than done if you have anything like a reasonably common name (best to have something pretty obscure up your sleeve before you start). Luckily there is a facility to be reminded of forgotten nametags. Entries are added immediately. You don't need to be registered to search the list, which is by means of a search box. This is quick and efficient but it can be frustrating not being able to browse (though the sheer numbers registered here would make that rather a bore). However, a useful feature when you get a match is the ability to view all the other surnames submitted by that submitter. You can also choose to view only recent updates, so you don't have to trawl through the same records every time you search.
