Guild of One-Name Studies

For anyone interested in following up research through a one-name studies website, GOONS will be the best place to start, precisely because it is UK-based. Note that a one-name study seeks to research all occurrences of a single surname, not to follow a particular family tree. Note also that the only method of return to the homepage, or indeed any other, is the 'back' button on the top toolbar.

SPECIAL FEATURES

About the Guild is essential reading before you start, it explains that The Guild Email Forum, free permanent email addresses and access to the Biography Database 1680-1830 are all restricted to members.

Contacting the Guild explains how requesting help from Guild Members, who all give their services voluntarily, is made easier if you ask specific rather than general questions and are patient about response times.

Registered Names contains details of over 7000 studies, accessible either by alphabetical listings or inserting a name in the search box. Each entry gives contact details for the compiler including email addresses where available. It can be very instructive to see the variants of names listed, as these give clues to alternative spellings to look for.

Online Records are as yet relatively limited, perhaps only two or three for each letter of the alphabet but this area will surely build up.

COMMENTS
Given that there is nowhere near enough space in this book to list one-name sites individually, your best route to exploring whether there is anything in them for you is probably to start here. That way you can take advantage of the good explanation of what one-name sites are and how to contribute. It probably makes sense to do a quick search and then use Cyndi's List if you want to try further afield.
