Marshall Brain's How Stuff Works
This is a US-based website, so the 'stuff' in question is described using American terminology ('cell phones' and not 'mobile phones', for example) and the presentation is rather cluttered. Don't let that put you off, though - this is an excellent resource for those with queries about science and technology. It is primarily directed at children, but the level at which it is pitched is serious enough for the average non-specialist to find it rewardingly informative. Information is obtained by two methods: either via the Super Categories in the left-of-page index, or via the search facility. Note that the search box has two buttons alongside it, offering a choice between searching within the How Stuff Works website itself or searching the Web as a whole. UK-based users need to be alert to American spellings, such as 'maneuver'.
